Joe, your summations are spot on. The producers probably were dropping subtle hints that Bub was leaving never to be seen again, and at least you have access to the episodes aired on TV Land. I haven't seen the bulk of Series 5 since 1977! A kind Canadian fan sent me a copy of "Here Comes Charley" through the Columbia Video Library Collection, and that print was (supposedly) exactly as it originally aired in Jan. 1965. The opening theme music with voice over just simply says: "My Three Sons... Starring Fred MacMurray.... brought to you by the Quaker Oats Company and Ken-L ration dog food". The last piece about the sponsors was in place of "and as Bub, William Frawley". According to my detailed records of the episodes the "and as Uncle Charley.. William Demarest" credit did not commence until the following episode, once it had been established that he was to be a regular character. This is an anomaly associated with the make up of the prints as prepared by the syndicator. I have seen the original voiceless opening theme from the first season tagged onto the beginning of Series 4 episodes. Similarly, the shorter opening theme from Series 6 is used in syndicated episodes of Series 10 (which should of course have the longer version with extended cast credits and alternate variation of the theme). Don't worry if your copy of the episode has the Bill Demarest intro -- all I am saying is that is not the way it was originally seen on ABC the first time it aired. The thing to really note here too is that from the perspective of almost forty years later, the original openings featuring sponsors and other differences are no longer used anyway. And for international viewers such as us here in Australia, those original openings were never shown during the 60s and were for continental US residents only. So in effect mate we are both correct for different reasons!
