Of course you are right. An engine is a convenience device - not a safety device.
As long as a person remains a wage slave (like myself), and engine, when it works properly, allows one to use those fleeting hours after work to get out on the water. I have an Alberg 37. It would be an incredible engineless boat. The engine allows me to get quickly out on the water and return in time for work even when the wind dies, but I never delude myself that the engine is making sailing more safe.
Of course I would become a better sailor and arguably enjoy life more if I simply quit my wage slave life style; then I could get rid of my cars too. I find cars to be far more irritating than motors on sailboats!
