if you're going to go for it, it's definitely worth getting a copy of 'practical junk rig' by hassler and macleod....it's super expensive but you can probably get it on an inter-library loan, and it's geared towards developing a sailplan to balance on an existing hull.

maybe you've got a copy already

you will probably have to do some structural modifications to strengthen the deck at the mast partners as there will be a lot more strain there, and there's a good chance you will have to change the mast location...i don't know the islander 21

jay and i probably have different ideas of what constitutes 'success', but i've seen some junk rig conversions that i think work fine, and certainly hassler's own folkboat conversion (jester) had some merits...you won't win any races or have super high windward performance but those probably aren't your highest priorities...some love em some hate em, but there are lots around here in b.c.

the junk rig yahoo group would probably a good place to start for advice
