Again, I don't think there is anything wrong with our deer herd. I think lack of places to hunt is by far the #1 reason we are loosing hunters. When my primary hunting club sold out a few years ago, I went a couple of years with hardly a place to hunt. Had it not been for a couple of private woodlots I was able to gain access too, I would have hung up hunting here.

Nevertheless, if change is coming, then the changes are going to have to be reasonable. Not only should the FWC consider regulations that will appeal to hunters coming in from other states, the FWC needs to also ensure that whatever changes they make won't anger the hunters we already have. Restrictions that are too tight may cause a sizeable number of hunters to get frustrated and quit. I've already heard some hunters say that they might as well hang up hunting here if the state only allows for a 2 buck limit.

For example, I don't think a two buck limit, three points on one side is reasonable and I would strongly oppose such a radical step. However, I would be perfectly happy with a tightly enforced three buck limit with no antler restrictions beyond the five-inch rule. A three buck limit will cause hunters to be selective, yet allow some flexibility for meat hunters to take a smaller buck. I suspect few hunters would will their limit with two or three spikes. Most would kill one spike and then save their other two slots for bigger bucks, which shouldn't cause any harm to the buck pool. If someone does decide to fill their slots on three spikes, then there will be three bigger bucks out there that will survive the season and live on. Its would be a win-win situation.
