Travis,

Great post!......and you need to be concerned. The meetings going on now will change Florida's deer hunting for many years to come. Like you, most do not want to see a shorter season, but something has to give.

The way things are now the FWC see's hunters disappearing at a alarming rate. If they don't or cannot change this trend then we will see hunter being pushed out by other users. This has already happened on many public area's. If you look at all the new state own public area's that have come into the WMA system over the pass 10 years or so you will see that just about all are quota hunts with short seasons.

There's only a few way's that the FWC is going to attract more hunters that I can see. Make the hunting better (more bucks to hunt or distrube what we have more evenly among hunters); make more land available to hunt at prices people can afford; and make the quota system fair.

By working with the Stakeholders groups the FWC is trying to unite the hunters into one strong vocie so they can get the funding to carry out good deer management. At this point I don't see that happening because most of the Stakeholders represents different hunters and no body wants to to give an inch, or they want no change at all. Since hunter numbers in Florida are declining, I don't think no change at all, is an option for the FWC.

In your post you indicated that you could live with some kind of bag limits and antler restrictions. This is what the Stakeholders needs to be asking the hunters that they represent, what can we live with, because change is coming. If we don't want shorter seasons, then the only options/tools the FWC has is bag limits and antler restrictions for the short term. We would all like to see more land open up to hunting, and more food plots, but that's not going to happen anytime soon, if at all.

So the way I see it is we better start deciding what kind of bag limits and antler restrictions that most of us can live with, because change is coming.
