Hi Maria, I think I can answer part of the question by saying that, last time, there were not enough candidates, so we didn't have a formal election. So, that may explain why there was no-one canvassing for votes.

Unlike County & Borough councilors, the role of parish councilor is unpaid and, for someone who is working, has to be fitted around the full time job. This probably explains why there are not so many people willing to put their names forward to do the job.

Hopefully next time, there will be more people interested in taking up the position.

I can't speak for anyone else but I do try to help the parishioners in my bit of the village - if I can - in the last week we have achieved a minor victory by having a couple of overgrown hedges trimmed (not a major issue, but it was important to the person who asked me about it). I have also helped a couple of parishioners to oppose a localised planning issue (again, successfully) and I have also tried to promote the times of meetings about the Jelson issue to try and cajole a few parishioners to make their voices heard at meetings.

AND, on a personal level, I still oppose the Jelson development but - as I am not on the Planning committee - I wasn't formally involved in that particular decision.
If I play Buggins advocate then the argument in favour of accepting is as follows: If We opposed it and Charnwood opposed it then Jelsons would likely win an appeal to the Government. In that case we may not get the Section 106 donation/brown envelope/money and then the village would have said "what use is the PC as we have the houses but nothing to show for it in extra community facilities"? The role of councilor has to be one where you have to try and balance all the various arguments against each other.

Even so, my personal feeling is that we should continue our opposition to the development as we also have a role in trying to preserve the rural nature of the village for future generations.

(I hope this helps explain some of the arguments and that I haven't upset too many people by stating personal opinions).
