In defense of the BCT, I find it difficult to call a section that recently won multiple APSE awards mediocre. Granted, awards don't mean a ton in the end, but if others in the business are placing value on their work then it should probably be mentioned.

As a former Beaver County resident and subscriber, I still keep up with their coverage. The high school preview looked sharp and had a few good features, though I just skimmed the team stuff. Their pro coverage isn't anything great, but should it be a priority? They've got to be down to 20-25k in circulation. They don't have the resources to cover the pro teams like the PG or Trib.

But they seem to cover high schools a ton, which is exactly what they should be doing considering the communities there. I don't think they've got great writers but they seem capable enough.

As for Perrotto, he's got experience and not much else. He doesn't break news and he's never been a great writer. So what does he add in this day and age? If he's been unhappy for 30 years, maybe the problem lies with him and not the employer.

Certainly, my writing ability is a subjective call and I have no problem with that criticism. However, I take exception to the notion that I've never broken news.

When I was a full-time writer at the BCT, I broke various trade stories including Denny Neagle to Atlanta, Kris Benson to the Mets and Brian Giles to San Diego. All were very significant moves at the time.

I also broke the story that Jason Kendall has agreed to what remains the largest contract in club history as well as the firing of Cam Bonifay as GM, the hiring of Neal Huntington as GM and the hiring of John Russell as manager.

Granted, I did not break any stories in recent years but I was also working in a freelance capacity the last six seasons, so it wasn't if there was incentive to put int the time to break stories for all the more the BCT pays.

People complain all the time about the media getting the facts wrong. Well, writing I never broke news is factually incorrect.

One question John, why did you allow them to treat you like $h!t for so, so many years??

It wasn't said you have never offered a breaking story, it was that you haven't recently.
And the fact you said your motivation level is in direct proportion to your paycheck is appalling.

Without going chapter and verse into everything, family reasons were part of the reason I stayed at the Times for so long.

As far as it being appalling that my work ethic was tied to what I was being paid, here's the deal: I went from having a full-time job to juggling four or five freelance gigs. The BCT was one of the worst-paying ones. I wasn't going to spend hours upon hours working on a job that paid less money at the expense of ones that paid more. It doesn't make very good sense from a business standpoint and when you are a freelancer and trying to make a living, it becomes business first.

Perrotto is right. People who have not freelanced don't get the lay of the land. Pay does go hand in hand with time and effort.

I know bloggers who work for free who are always out there trying to break stories. Pay level shouldn't matter if you have passion and pride in what you are writing.

Passion and pride don't pay the bills. And don't say that motivation and drive are unaffected when contracts or management orders result in arbitrary pay cuts or rolling layoffs.

Decent pay IS a motivational force for anyone in any business to be happy and productive. And vice versa.

I'd imagine these blogger buddies of yours have an additional source of income. If it's not a hobby, you shouldn't be giving your work away for less than fair market pay.

Some people bust their butts to get their names out there.

You're not making any sense.

There seems to be some confusion here and an implication that he was supposed to be donating his talents to the BCT like a college kid taking an unpaid internship.

He wants to cover the major leagues without having paid his dues. He wants to go straight from college to the bigs without ever having covered a high school game or actually learned the business. It's what kids do these days. They steal other people's work, re-write it, give it to a blog factory for free and "get their name out there." It's hard work, man.

Isn't the subject here a 30-some-year professional, not a recent college grad?

Yes, but Jacob's statements leave doubts he's astute enough to see that.

Jacob, can you tell us how you pay YOUR bills and why bloggers should toil for nothing and give their work away out of some misbegotten sense of idealism or charity?

Bloggers are people who just want internet fame because they think they look important to their friends by their clicks and twitter followers.

Some bloggers are paid. Some bloggers attached to legit journalism entities are for real. But a lot of people in legit journalism are so fearful of their job security they hate ALL bloggers. Some of these people would do better to work harder themselves.

There's only so many paying jobs in newspapers and they are slowly dying by the day (see the Trib). Some people don't land that paying writing job out of college and so they write on their own until they make it full time.

Some papers underpay for 30 years and treat their writers like crap (John Perrotto's thoughts) to the point where he doesn't work as hard to scoop things. Yet in the journalism world he'd still be more respected than those "idiot bloggers" right?

The only difference between bloggers and established media is access and some established media don't do much with that access to begin with.

I have to laugh at this. I don't work hard? I'm lucky if I have five full days off the entire year. Give me your real name and number instead of hiding behind an alias. I'll call you and explain exactly how the real world is.

APSE judges are from outside the market, so they're reacting to pretty pages and heart-tugger stories about the high school kid who won a track meet two days after his grandpa died. They have no idea if the section is serving the readers, if the priorities are in the proper order or if any of the names are spelled correctly. I guess APSE plaques look good on the wall, but they don't really mean much.
