Subject: Micco on "Sunday Edition" = SNL Sketch

Sunday's "KD/PG Sunday Edition" with Stacy and, sitting in for Beltway Dave, his pal Jerry Micco, the overrated Sports Editor now Sunday Editor. He's been criticized on the forum in the past but today was a hoot. They had a good guest: Peter Salk, MD, son of Jonas and President of a Foundation dedicated to preserving his dad's legacy. Between Stacy's intelligent, informed questions, Jerry contributed shallow inquiries with frequent hesitations revealing him beyond his comfort zone in this setting. He might be fine on a sports talk segment, but not here.

PG involvement in local programs like this might have been Craig's idea, but that was ages ago. "Sunday Edition" seldom puts the PG in a great light. Jerry symbolizes Shrib's continued bad judgment thinking a mediocre Sports editor could blossom into Charlie Rose, another bad reflection on Shrib, JR and their emaciated PG.

Sue, at least, has actually reported "news" stories prior to becoming a PG editor. Jerry is fooling no one at the PG. He's a duck out of water on the news side. But, he's one of Parkway's boys so it's doubtful that he'll ever have to worry about getting a pink slip. I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think Micco has any experience outside of sports on the 3-4 papers he's worked for. If he did, it was with the Buckwheat Gazette long, long ago. I know for a fact, Micco had never been to the courthouse, the cop headquarters and a municipal meeting (in Pittsburgh) before becoming Sunday Editor. With that kind of resume, it's tough to gain the respect of your peers It's a totally different world covering fires, the cops or the courts. In sports, you go to the game, then are spoon fed information at the post-game pressers. The deadlines for sports are often impossible and the travel can be rough, but the rest of the job is generally enjoyable. For 3-4 years, Micco did well running PG sports. Then, I'm not sure what happened. From reading the paper, it appeared he just lost interest during his final couple of years in sports. He seemed more interested in being a political animal amongst his fellow AP sports editors.

Get past that old Pulitizer from his Globe days, and Beltway doesn't have much of a track record, does he? He brought in Globe columnist Jennifer Graham, whose prejudices made her such a laughingstock she didn't last a year, all so the Blocks could boost their conservative cred. She embarrassed the entire paper and then returned to Boston to work for the Deseret News (in Salt Lake City!). The PG had two Deputy ME's in barely three years. The idea of Dave promoting a Shrib-kid like Micco to a job he can't handle isn't a shock. Jerry comes off not just like a fish out of water, but the way Bob Pompeani would on Meet The Press or Washington Week In Review.

Somehow, I can't see Sue Smith sitting next to Stacy. She doesn't strike me as having any more TV presence than Beltway himself, so the idea she's a "slightly" better choice just about covers it. If the PG was smart [which they are not], they would bow out of this Sunday AM farce altogether.

What do the numbers say about this show -- as in, does anybody watch it? How big are the audience and ratings? They are against all the national news related shows on Sunday mornings. I guess you have to give some props to the fact it is about 20 years on the tube, so advertisers might like it OK.

Craig saw it as an advertising or PR vehicle -- look at us, the big deal newspaper organization here, with the big deal TV news operation here. As for content, he probably thought it doesn't matter -- anyone can fake it, even Shribman, just so you see the name Post-Gazette and are more likely to buy it. But has the show broken any big news in its 20 years, anything you can remember the show actually gave the world in terms of big news? Just a fireside chat with people on one or both sides of current issues but not moving the news needle ahead, though maybe enhancing viewers' (if there are any) understanding of the issues. It keeps on chugging, so someone must be watching, unless KD writes some off as public benefit telecasting -- the theory being the well informed citizenry due to the actions of the fourth estate makes America or at least Pittsburgh better and smarter.

You might be right but in 2017, that's an archaic line of thinking. "You see the name Post-Gazette and are more likely to buy it." When it actually had some heft to it, maybe so. When it didn't cost $ 2 a pop Monday-Saturday and $ 2.50 Sundays, and it took some time to read through, that could well have been true. Not now. Does anyone really think Shribman, who almost never comments on local events in his dull Sunday column, actually cares about the TV topics? He's there because JR tells him to be. The PG used to trumpet things like this and play the role of the "big deal newspaper organization" when they felt Scaife breathing down their necks with the Pittsburgh Trib but the events of the past year make that view outdated as well.

Your last take about KD seeing the show as "public benefit telecasting" comes closest to the truth. They try to give it meaning by running it against the Sunday morning news talk shows. But it doesn't help, and it's safe to say it doesn't bring one new reader to the PG. It may actually chase away a few.
