I'm not at all concerned with names of ranks, in fact i would heartily support moving away from a fantasy/arthurian legend based guild language anyway, but thats a subject for another day.
rank1: join guild, be active member - all rights of members, but minus the right to vote for high council (or kort, or whatever)
rank2: time in guild: 2-3 months, recommended by at least 5 full members (define full member as rank 2 and above - i.e. have the right to vote) to be promoted, with no dissenting opinions. gains right to vote over rank1, no special privleges though.
rank3: demonstrate leadership potential and an interest in helping the guild grow (i.e. volunteering for projects, attending meetings, consistently voting when asked). no special privleges, but higher ranking members groom these people to be leaders.
rank4: leaders in the guild, examples of the camelot ideals, active in multiple facets of the guild (i.e. not just gaming)
rank 5: high council, puts issues to vote before the guild. can appoint temporary councils. hmm, this seems really messy. tell ya what, gimme two days to draft a constitution and i can propose some stuff that'll blow y'alls minds. it'll be based on what you see here, but it'll plug all the rampant holes and answer all those questions.
as for merits/awards: dont make them necessary for advancement, but rather have some other function they can serve.
