Subject: Ebay and Paypal fake (spoof) emails

Ebay and Paypal fake emails are a big problem! Thought I'd post some tips for all of you Ebay users so you can more easily tell if the email you got is legit or not.

Spoof emails usually want you to click a link and provide your personal information (username & password). NEVER click a link in any Ebay or Paypal email. You always can go to the website yourself and log in and take care of any problem. They will not ask you to take care of a problem by clicking a link.

If it's a legit Ebay email, you can log in to your MyEbay page and the same email will be in your MyMessages inbox. If it's not there, it was not sent from Ebay. I suggest you check all Ebay emails this way.

No Ebay or Paypal email will EVER have an attachment.

Paypal and Ebay emails will address you by first and last name. Never the generic "dear member" or "dear user". Sure, some spoof emails address you by name also but many more use a generic greeting.

If you get an email you suspect is a spoof, you should forward it to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com. They will quickly get back to you and tell you if it was a legit email or not.

If you do happen to fall for one of these spoofs and click a link, immediately change your email password, your Ebay password, and your Paypal password. The Ebay homepage has a link right on it for Live Help. The one thing Live Help is good at doing is helping you if your Ebay account has been hijacked (taken over by someone else). Go there and chat with them and they can help restore your account to you.

[> [> I spend waaaaaaay too much time on Ebay. They've made some changes lately that are not sitting well with long-term users. Changes they claim make the site more secure but, in reality, make it easier in some ways for the scammers. *sigh* I could go on but we're not here to talk about Ebay's stupid decisions. -- Sarahsue, 19:12:43 02/01/07 Thu [1]

[> Sarahsue, great advice, and it can be used for any company. I get things from banks and once from Best Buy where they congratulated me on my new Sony Vaio I ordered - which I didn't. There was an attachment there as well. -- judi, 19:28:45 02/01/07 Thu [1]

[> [> Yes, good point! No e-commerce site will send you an email with an attachment. Lately, I've been getting spoof from Amazon too. They all filter to my spam folder though because of the weird email addresses sending them. -- Sarahsue, 12:57:46 02/02/07 Fri [1]
