BIG PROBLEM HELP ! -- Laurence, 20:24:45 11/09/07 Fri [5]
I'm at my 2nd laptop.
When I was on internet, at a given time, about 20 minutes or less, or 1 hour, well at any time, I was disconnected from internet, in having a message who appeared : " you have been disconnected " " yes " " no " .
I had to click of course, on " yes " and have to close internet, so I could re - connect.
It never was found what it was. I changed my laptop, 1, or 2 years ago, and it's re - biginning. I'm VERY AFRAID.
PLEASE HELP ME !

- I don't think you have to be afraid. Are you on wireless? Often when I boot up, I don't get instant connection on my laptop, and have to click on a box. Then connection is made. When I'm on my wireless desktop, and I get disconnected, I first check the old computer (not wireless) to see if the my server is down. If I can go online on the old computer, but not the wireless, I just disconnect AND unplug the wireless router, and then reconnect and plug back in. Then I get connected again. - Help!! -- Gibson, 18:40:09 11/08/07 Thu [5]
I don't suppose anyone has any advice for me. I'm trying to watch a Bones episode from the "Fox on Demand" website. I went there yesterday and was prompted to download some software to view the episode - I did (although I chose to "run" instead of "save" it at the time). It looked as though I was going to be able to view the video no problem after that, although I didn't have time to by that point.
When I went back to the website tonight to watch it, everytime I click on the icon to view the ep, it doesn't prompt me to download the software again, but just after the video screen comes up, a black rectangle pops up on the screen. It doesn't ask anything - it just partially obscures the screen. I can still press the play button, but nothing happens.
I'm running IE, I've tried updating Flashplayer and restarting, but nothing works. I don't even know what that software I ran from the site last night was called so I can't uninstall it and download it again, or can I?
Anyway, I'd appreciate any help - I want to watch Bones!!! Thanks!

HOEXES etc. -- Cece, 11:04:26 11/03/07 Sat [5]
I've just received another email from a friend warning me about a Virus that uses the word "Invitation" in the subject, and also "Olympic Torch." I checked with snopes.com and it's an old hoax that makes its appearance around Olympic game years.
EVERY single warning email I've received over the years has been about a hoax virus. My friends have received the email from their friends and so on and so on. All the email warning sound the same, and use the same wording and offer the same kinds of advice on how to combat the (fake) virus/worm, etc.
What I want to know is what does a REAL warning look like, how are they sent out, and who sends them? These fakes waste everyone's time and often get the receivers into more trouble and costs. So how are we warned about real viruses? Anyone know?
I know one thing, I dump ALL emails from people who don't identify themselves clearly. I don't give them a second thought. I'm just not likely to open an Invitation email from a total stranger.
And when I send emails to people who might not recognize my email name, I state clearly in the subject box, who I am and what I writing about.

Spam and "Turing Numbers" -- The Chief, 08:43:21 10/11/07 Thu [9]
After reading Judi's post today on the HB about instituing "Turing Numbers" to protect us from spam, I was wondering if the term was named after Alan Turing, considered the father of modern computer science.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing
A favorite author of mine, Donna Andrews, has written 4 mysteries using the name Turing for an Artificial Intelligence Program that is the main character and crime-solver. They're wonderful, fascinating stories, funny and thoughtful and full of cool computer stuff. Judi, you'd probably love these!! The AIP is named "Turing Hopper". Hopper is for Grace Hopper, a computer scientist and - get this - NAVAL officer! (so there's even a Harm/JAG connection, albeit tenuous) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper
The books are titled: "You've Got Murder", "Click Here for Murder", "Access Denied" and "Delete All Suspects".
Check 'em out!

A little hint for those who are getting a laptop for the first time. -- Cece, 09:32:29 10/05/07 Fri [12]
I like to describe myself as an infomaniac, and a mouseophile. As such, I had no patience with the slowness of negotiating a keyboard without a mouse. I can use the touch pad, but I find it awkward after years of using a mouse on my desktop.
To me, it wasn't worth the effort. It was like using a screwdriver instead of an elecric drill. So when I got my MacBook last year, I purchase a little mouse with a chord. That presented its own problems, particularly as I am right handed and the plugins are all on the left side of the computer. I really didn't get any pleasure out of using my laptop.
Anyway, I finally bought a wonderful, small wireless mouse and I am beginning to love my Mac. There are many brands available, but the one I got is pretty metalic blue Logitech with a wireless plug in thingy that clicks conveniently onto the bottom of the mouse. It also turns the mouse off as it clicks in.
I love it and totally recommend it (or something similar) for new laptop users who don't want to go through the painful process of using keys and annoying finger pads. Oh and these mouses seem to work perfectly on any surface, even rumpled bed comforters (which I'm using as my mouse pad right now...lol.) It's also light and easy to store wherever you store your laptops.

I still prefer my old unit, but the laptop is convenient., The only problem is that I have to deal with Windows Vista, and seeing that I'm not that swift when it comes to any program, its been a real challenge. - I use my wireless mouse right on the laptop itself. The way mine is laid out, there is all sorts of space to the right and the left of the touchpad, so I use that blank, flat surface as my "mousepad". I've been able to use my laptop easily without a mouse, when I've been a passenger in the car on a long trip. My husband dictated a bunch of letters, and I typed. However, if I'd had a wireless mouse at the time, I could have used it as it works on any surface, wobbly or smooth. Also, I simply can not draw or do any art or designs, without a mouse. - Help setting up a Yahoo email account in Entourage (part of the Office for Mac) -- Colie, 11:48:54 10/11/07 Thu [5]
I have a new MacBook (woohoo! :-)) with the student version of the Office for Mac, which includes Entourage. I have successfully set up two of my email accounts in Entourage (worked like a charm, no thanks to me since it did it all by itself, LOL). Now I tried to add another account, which is with yahoo.com, but when I verify the account settings, it keeps telling me that either my yahoo account name or my password is wrong. But I put them in correctly; I know they are right.
Has anybody encountered this particular problem, or has an idea what else I could do or try out etc.?
Thank you!

This isn't really a problem, unless you have a Mac. -- Cece, 09:32:11 10/01/07 Mon [13]
I have two PCs but my laptop is a Mac. Last week, I did a birthday post for Corinne (now at the bottom of the main page.) I forgot to close of the font tags for the large print in the greeting. However, I corrected it right away and all was well.
Later, doc (who has a Mac), did a post and commented that all the big print below gave her a headache. I looked, but it all seemed ok to me.
Some days later, I was scrolling down the board on my Mac, and found that the print below Corinne's post was huge. I tried correcting it, but to no avail. It's still big print on my Mac.
Judi explained that not all browsers are the same, and that maybe PCs are more forgiving of html errors. She also told me that when I do html on the fanfic archive website, I have to make sure I close off all the tags, for the same reason. It may look ok to me, but it might not look ok on other computers.
Have any Mac users noticed any of this or any other problems that appear that we might not see on our computers?

I've been using Brinkster for the HBX Archives, collages, and videos etc, as well as a couple of personal business sites. But I am SO sick of Brinkster. In fact, this year particularly, it sucks.
I don't have much time to update the archives, so when I get the chance, I want to be able to get into Brinkster, and do the uploading, coding etc.
It's so hit and miss that I can get into the webroot. Yesterday and today, I can't get in to the site at all.
Judi is the webmistress of a couple of sites, and she called for help a couple of months ago. She got nowhere. They blamed cookies, and whatever else that to me, a PAYING customer, is totally irrelevant.
So I DON'T recommend Brinkster to anyone. I think judi is going to look around for another company. She is more than qualified to do her own research, but it would be nice to have some recommendations to throw into the mix. Does anyone have any?

Computers on tv.... -- The Chief, 10:43:34 10/01/07 Mon [5]
I was watching a movie the other night that had a guy setting up a bomb + warhead with a laptop. He was typing away like he was e-mailing his girlfriend while the image on the screen updated and changed.
We've all seen many shows and movies where someone using the computer is typing furiously at something when, in all reality, most of us would be pointing and clicking to do the same thing. I also remember Meg in "Shadow" just tapping away at that computer trying to get the password for the missle....
What I wanna know is, do the directors make the characters "type" just to make it look like they're "doing" something - is pointing and clicking BORING?
OR
When it's computer nerds, science guys, or whatever, do they really have programs that REQUIRE keyboarding and not mousing? Or maybe the nerds just ENJOY keyboarding more (I mean, they ARE nerds...)?
So what's the deal, judi?

- Chief, you can do a lot with a keyboard, but not everything. Arrow keys can take you from field to field, The little start button on your keyboard takes you to start on your screen, clicking the enter button is the same as hitting ok with the mouse; and then there are the function keys. Click here for a list of shortcuts on your keyboard. But yea, I do think they take liberties on tv to save time. (NT) -- judi, 15:43:25 10/01/07 Mon
- First, *I* really think they have characters typing furiously because it can convey urgency more than frantically moving a mouse around and clicking .... there's also the typing-sound-effects! LOL! That said, one *could* argue that it's ONE thing to be using some application to do whatever (clicking on icons) and another to be programming or RE-programming. I usually get the impression (and it's probably because to me, typing furiously suggests actually programming under pressure) that those characters workign against the clock or while a bomb is ticking and pounding on the key board are programming trying to get fix or change whatever and so typing is what they'd be doing rather than "mousing". (NT) -- MichelleB (former nerdy programmer), 18:07:44 10/01/07 Mon
- I'm sure it's all whatever has the most effect. It's like when they used to show people driving, they'd show the driver moving the steering wheel back and forth to give the impression of driving. As for effect, remember the old teletypes? Even the Zulu type on JAGs was a throwback to that, I believe. (NT) -- Cece (Hey, a post with Heather, judi, MichelleB, and Cece! - Internet Connection Problem & Questions -- Sunny, 10:20:09 09/28/07 Fri [4]
I have one PC tower at home, connected to DSL via a modem supplied by my provider. The connection developed trouble the other night. All my usual diagnostics, restarts and fixes did not work. In talking to tech support, who altho being Indian actually DID seem to know his stuff, he walked me all through reconfiguring my local driver, turning off my network driver (with no network, why did I have one - no clue; probably from a previous tech support call 2 years ago). Everything worked great, got right back up on the net, faster than the connections I'd become accustomed to. He had me put a shortcut on my desktop, linking to the new configuration.
Alas, when I went on this AM, that shortcut took me to a DIAL-UP configuration, which rather defeats the purpose of DSL ! I tried going into the control panel and checking out my internet connections. No joy there in finding a problem, but PC prompts me that I do not have an internet connection, unless I designate the dial-up choice. What the heck is going on ???
Any and all help would be most appreciated. And no, I have no idea where the CD for the original driver is anymore. Otherwise I would have already deleted and reinstalled that driver. Sigh....

When your old computer stops working or is just so slow you want to throw it across the room, it's called a boat anchor because that's about all it's good for...
Until now...

- Okay, so did any of you techies buy an iPHONE yesterday? -- CM>^.,.^<, 11:36:46 06/30/07 Sat [2]
I didn't, since I only use my cell for calls when I HAVE to, I really hate talking on the phone.
As for all the other stuff an iPHONE does, CatMom still has a bit of difficulty walking and talking at the same time, so doing anything else on the go is of limited attraction to her.

I am looking at buying an iPod/MP3 player. Any one out there with advise? I want to be able to download my CDs and than use the MP3 player at work instead of the 5 disc CD changer. I would also like to be able to download videos. Any pitfalls I need to know about?

- Actually I should have mentioned this is my Mother's Day gift - the kids( 28,26,21&19) said pick it out and we'll get it. (NT) -- usmgrad, don't you just love kids!, 15:41:55 05/11/07 Fri
- DH has an iPod and prefers that over other brands. Apple has probably the best setup out there (software, service, etc). It is easy to rip CDs, easy to use, easy to sync with your computer. He did a lot of research before buying one and decided on iPod. Because that brand is so popular, it's easy to get all sorts of accessories that are quite handy. - "rip CD's" and "sync with your computer" looks like I'll be learning another language with an iPod also. I'm just now getting "computerese" mastered. (NT) -- usmgrad, thanks for the help, 06:17:49 05/12/07 Sat
- I just have to say the iPod is one of the greatest inventions around. Not only do I have almost all my CD's loaded, I have JAG videos loaded and photos of kids and grandkids. Work will never be the same again. (NT) -- usmgrad, I am having way too much fun!, 13:17:37 05/15/07 Tue
- Along this line - anyone know of a good place to get an iPod fixed? I have a nano that will play for a few seconds and then quit. It was just over a year old when it died so I hear Apple won't fit it. (NT) -- Carrotts, 10:44:01 05/16/07 Wed
- If you want videos, you'll need a player with a screen, BUT, if you want to try the iPod line for just music, you can get a Shuffle for $80. They're amazingly tiny and can clip to your pocket, but they hold 240 songs. You can play "in order" or "shuffle" the songs, and you can skip forward and back, but that's about it. There's no screen. My son got one for Christmas and loves it. The only thing we learned is that in order to plug it into one of the portable speaker systems (like a clock radio for iPods), the unit must have a USB port. The Shuffle doesn't have the same kind of connector that the larger Nano (is that an oxymoron? "larger Nano"?) or regular iPod. I own a Dell Dimension 4600C (as my desktop/home computer). It's been great but there is one thing that has been driving me crazy for the last year or so - for some reason I'm having trouble with Flashplayer. I'm pretty sure it wasn't always a problem (I've had this computer for a few years now), but I'm guessing at some point my Anti-Virus software (Norton at present) is interfering with ActiveX controls or something and preventing it to download. Either that or maybe it has to do with Internet Explorer 7 that I dowloaded several months ago? Everytime I try to download Flashplayer, I get the little movie that says that you will see when it is successfully downloaded, but if I visit a site that requires Flash, I always get a message that I need to download Flashplayer! Grrrr! It's frustrating b/c I have no problem on my laptop (also a Dell). I've tried toying with the internet settings and such, but I must not be 'tweeking' the right thing b/c I've had no success yet. Any suggestions!
TIA!

- Question -- Carrotts, 07:13:16 05/01/07 Tue [5]
I'm trying to control a very large Word document. I've got the dang thing formatted, even have the pictures and captions formatted correctly so that their numbers change when I move stuff around or add/delete pictures and such.
Now the question: Is there a way to link the reference I made to a particular caption to that particular caption? So that if the caption number changes that number will change as well. Am I being clear? Shoot. For instance, if I say "The world will end tomorrow as described in figure 8 below" but then need to add some pre-end of world pictures first and now the end of the world description is figure 12. Is there a way to automatically make my document change to "The world will end as described in figure 12 below"?
You'd think it wouldn't be hard to change a few references. Well now I'm up to 68 and I have to add some, and I never get to add at the end. And I have to keep it updated daily because it is on a shared workspace and some idiot will always complain if the references don't match the captions. The world can end tomorrw and that's okay - but the reference MUST match the caption. .. hate them.

When should you , and how do you, delete cookies? -- Cece, 11:46:20 04/17/07 Tue [9]
I know my computer expert, judi, will be able to answer this one, but maybe other people out there would like to know the answer too.
Sometimes, when I am having trouble updating my web site, I wonder if cookies are slowing me down. Although they've been explained to me, I still don't really understand what they are. And I don't know when I should be deleting them. AND I have no idea how to delete them.
Besides, just the thought of them makes me hungry....lol.

- Cec, search your hard drive for your cookies folder. Many of the cookies tell you where they are from so you can pick which ones you want to get rid of. If you just delete all of them, it will cause you an annoyance for a while because you will have deleted the 'good' cookies too. You can delete them all by going into Tools/internet options in your IE browser and then just click on "delete cookies" You can also delete temp files there. (NT) -- judi, 12:54:57 04/17/07 Tue
- Your cookies folder can easily be found. Double click "my computer", then double click on your hard drive (usually the C drive) and you should see a folder marked "cookies". When you open that up, there they all are. Click on them once and you can see what they are for or at least the site names. I delete anything I don't know what the heck it is. Or, you can get rid of them all under "tools" (on any browser window) and "internet options", the Privacy tab and you should see cookies in there somewhere plus the option to delete them all. I do that sometimes too. (NT) -- Sarahsue--you might also try clearing your cache, also under the "tools", "internet options" on any browser window. Then, close and restart the browser and that can help., 15:56:58 04/17/07 Tue
Thank you judi and Sarahsue. I shall go cookie hunting tonight, and see if getting rid of them improves things. But I have to wonder why we need cookies in the first place. (NT) -- Cece, 17:53:50 04/17/07 Tue
- Hmmmm....I finally found the cookie folder, but when I clicked on it, up came a file with "index" on it. When I tried opening, it said that it was a DAT file and I needed to find something to open it with. However, it warned me that I could damage my computer. So it looks like I have to live with my cookies. (NT) -- Cece...getting hungry again., 18:04:15 04/17/07 Tue
- I always thought you deleted cookies by dunking them in milk and gobbling them down. Huh. Larn sumpin new ever day 'roun' here! LOL (NT) -- The Chief (just being corny), 07:01:27 04/23/07 Mon
