I'm tired of all the cool clothing sites out there for my 20-something daughter and, of course, my teenage daughter. And I'm not talking about sales websites -- I mean a straightforward advice, tips, 'make-over' recommendation for body types -- even perhaps a sort of 'What Not To Wear' online process if women send in their photos and typical daily, occasion, weekend, etc outfits and then get instructions on better outfits. - Now, I have a question..... -- Martian Barb, 09:29:20 03/03/09 Tue [4]
My family is having a family reunion this August. While I do have a lot of family in Pittsburgh, there is a large amount of cousins, aunts and uncles who live out of state.
The reunion will be at my house, since I live in the family homestead. To try to get all of the information about the reunion out there, we would like to have a web site, but I don't have a clue about doing it! I checked with my internet supplier and the tech support person told me that even though he works for this company, he would not use the web hosting program for himself.
I do have a Facebook group for our family, but not everyone is on Facebook!
So, does anyone have any idea of how we can go about it?
I really would appreciate any help.

I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but if it isn't, maybe someone can direct me elsewhere. Has anyone out there used any program--software, or on line--for sorting and storing genealogical info, including pictures? I know there used to be programs you could buy, and I also know there are websites on the topic. I am mainly looking for organization and storage right now, rather than searching, but that could change if I can get things sorted out. We are getting a new computer, courtesy of our daughter (as a birthday present), and it will be a Dell, so we can order what we want or need on it. Is there anything different it should have for stuff like this? More memory, a different kind of anything? You can see that I don't know a whole lot about computers, although I've learned enough to deal with them fairly well at work. Any suggestions from anyone would be most welcome!

Don't know if it's because it's an Apple product and I'm using Windows XP on a PC, but anyway, I've become frustrated with it and want to change. I just don't want to bother trying to find a new browser, and build up new bookmarks again, only to have that one not work for me either. So, does anyone have a browser they're really happy with?

I need some help with web design software for Windows Vista 64 Bit --
nancyeddy, 22:22:14 01/21/09 Wed [2]
I just got a new computer (we're leasing it from Rent A Center, actually) and it's got Vista 64 on it. I'm just about used to it - except that the web design software that I've used almost since I first starting MAKING pages won't work on the darn thing. Yeah, I know that PageMill 3.0 is old, and that Adobe doens't make or support it anymore, but it worked for me.
Now, without a program that will edit frames and is WYSIWYG, I'm unable to edit some of my sites.
Does anyone have any ideas for something I can use that will work on this beast --- and won't cost me an arm and a leg and my firstborn child?

I thought CDs were supposed to last forever??? -- The Chief, 07:17:25 10/18/08 Sat [7]
I have a question about playing OLD CDs on NEW equipment...
I've got a Steely Dan greatest hits CD with a copyright date of 1985. When I try to listen to it on my computer, it sounds like a scratchy old vinyl record. It didn't used to do that - as I've played it on my computer before - but since we had a new CD/DVD combo player installed, my older CDs all sound really scratchy. They sound fine in the car, or on other CD players.
It was suggested that I try to play it as a DVD, but with the combo drive, it automatically reads it as a CD and uses that laser.
Any suggestions???

- Update.... I did have success with ripping the music into WMP - it sounds fantastic with not a hint of static. It's the direct playback that is the problem. (NT) -- The Chief, 07:27:47 10/18/08 Sat
- I'm assuming this thing plays new CDs okay? And no, unfortunately, CDs aren't guaranteed to last forever. I'll have DH look at your question when he unplugs himself from whatever game he's paying. lol (NT) -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 10:35:33 10/18/08 Sat
- Thx, JJ!! I'm thinking this might be a "generational" issue - i.e. the CD player software is too new a generation to play this older disk. I look forward to finding out what you come up with. (NT) -- The Chief, 13:54:39 10/18/08 Sat
- He doesn't think there is a generational gap. CDs are written in binary code (1s and 0s). It could be that your CD/DVD thing is bad (I've had that problem). Or it could be that it's software is "goofy" (his words). Can you play it using Windows Media Player or Real Player? Sometimes CD-Rs don't play on everything, but I've never heard of a genuine CD purchased in a store not playing on something unless there was another reason. (NT) -- JJ (Ronda), 16:06:40 10/18/08 Sat
- And you know I'm loaded with old CDs! LOL (NT) -- JJ (Ronda)--that should be "its" not "it's" in my post above. I'm usually better at grammar than that. lol, 16:09:07 10/18/08 Sat
- No, it's not my player, JJ. New/recent CD's play just fine. As for software, I've tried it with both WMP and Nero, and both have that "static-y" sound. I have other players (Quicktime, Real1, and the like), but haven't tried them. If you were to HEAR it, you could tell that it was "digitizing" or "skipping" something. But when I rip it and replay it from the file, it sounds fine because it's been converted to a .wav or whatever. The Laser MUST be reading all the info, but the playback misses teeny bits. You just buy a wireless router from Future Shop, Best Buys, etc., plug it in, and then you can use your computers and wireless printers, tivo, etc. from anywhere in the house. At least, that is what I do with cable. If you take your laptop outside the house, you can access the internet from wi-fi free cafes, libraries, offices, etc., but you shouldn't steal wi-fi from your neighbours. (NT) -- Cece, 00:02:20 08/10/08 Sun
- Just make sure when setup the wireless router that you password protect it or someone could steal your bandwidth. Also if your laptop has a built in wireless card need to know if G or N. N is the newest format and is faster then G. Not all cards support the N format it so if card in laptop doesn't support it but buy a router that does and it isn't backward compatible won't work or if does work won't be as fast. I would do a little research to find the best one for the price. Places like cnet will rate the different routers. (NT) -- Hope, 09:04:06 08/10/08 Sun
- Thank you for your input. I'm just not sure does the wireless internet router use paid to the cable company? I understand you buy the router at the store but who do I pay for the internet access? (NT) -- LisaJAG...thank goodness I have a place to go like this!, 18:03:00 08/10/08 Sun
- Also, if your PC isn't too old, it can be wireless too using the same wireless router. If it is too old, no worries. You just attach your PC to the router, and move your laptop around the house. Right now, I have two PC desktops both wireless, and a Mac laptop, also wireless. I also have wireless mice, keyboard, printer, and my tivo is running off a wireless router. It's great. Are there specific sites that folks like? Are the photos secure, or can anyone copy them after they've been uploaded? Are there size requirements for the various photo sites? And remember, I'm a Mac person...that's the computer not the character, LOL!
I have these fantastic photos from my garden. They are all "up close" nature shots, some with butterflies, bees, etc. The resolution is amazing! You can see the "fur" on the bee, and even see the wings buzzing. The floral shots are beautiful. Since we discussed garden, I thought folks might be interested, but I don't know how to post them.

I am running Vista on my new lap top. I haven't had too much trouble with it and I am getting used to it, but I have Windows Photo Gallery on it and I hate it! I hate it with a passion! It keeps my pictures so disorganized its own "organized" way. I can't seem to find anything I download from my camera or anything that I scan.
Right now, I am in the process of scanning a lot of old pictures for family that is coming in for my son's wedding. I also want to give him the pictures also. My husband and the father of the bride are putting together a power point show of Chris and Ashley for the wedding, so between those two things, I really need my pictures organized, not the jumbled mess they are now.
My question is this: Is there some way to go back to the way XP used to organize pictures, that is in separate folders, not cross references and in many different folders? I just want to be able to go into my pictures file and then into a folder marked "July2008" or "Chris and Ashley." Is that too hard to ask? Is there some way to delete Windows Photo Gallery and go back to the old way?

Getting XP legitimate? -- CB, 13:34:08 06/17/08 Tue [3]
I have a new (second hand) computer since a year and got it with a company win XP on it. But, since I am not in the company, after the first update, I got the notice that I did not have a legitimate XP.
So, I got my hands on a download for Win XP and a SP3, with serial code.
I just ran it (setup version..not a complete boot...as to save my own files) and darn it, I again get the notice that it is not a legitimate software (I did use the product key that came with it).
Do I need to format my C drive and run it from the boot up or is there another way, or will that even work?
It is very annoying to keep getting this notice since 1) I can't update my windows,
2) can't run Media Player
3) can't run my photoshop program
and all the other things that have to work with a valid XP, won't work.

To be fair, it's probably not Vista's fault. It's most likely my fault as I'm too lazy to figure it all out. But that's the point. I shouldn't have to figure it all out this late into computer technology.
I LOVE my new computer (Sony Vaio with the cpu right in the monitor, and wireless keyboard that you can fold up. It looks like the monitor screen is floating.)It's gorgeous. But the operating system? Not so much. I've had this computer for 3 1/2 months, and every day, I give up on something or other.
Today it's You Tube. I can't get any of the videos. Yesterday, it was Flash...I have to download it all over again.
Posting on the HB is dead slow. I'm just totally irritated. I don't WANT to be asked if I'm allowing an email to be sent. Of COURSE I know I have email in my Outbox. I just hit SEND! Why would I need to give two instruction?
I know judi is not having a problem, or if she is, she figures it out right away. But I'm fast losing interest. Is anyone else finding Vista a tad annoying?

- You can still buy new computers with XP on them. Just try the "small and medium business" section on Dell or Gateway. You have your choice of Vista or XP plus the computer'll come without a lot of the pre-installed stuff the home versions do. You don't have to have a business to purchase from that section. Disappearing files under a specific user.......Inside for details -- Kimster, 20:06:16 02/25/08 Mon [7]
About 6 months ago, I logged onto my desktop and all of my icons were gone, email was empty, it was as thought it was a brand new user account. I was able to recover the emails and files and copied them over into a new user. This weekend, I came home and the samething happened again to the new account I created 6 months ago, only this time, the "my document" folder was completely empty, and she files were moved into a temp directory. By the time I made a new user and was ready to copy over the temp folder, everything was gone. All my school files, saved FF's everything was gone. I was able to recover the emails, but no files. Even system restore didn't help. I did have a backup and could restore from that, but I'm afraid I have a worm or something that neither Norton or Mcafee is picking up, and I'm going to have this same problem again. There are two other users on this computer and nothing has happened to them.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kimster

- Got an ethical sort-a question -- Carrotts, 17:14:50 02/04/08 Mon [16]
I used to live in the middle of no-where where my only option for cable was DirecTV and my only option for any type of high-speed internet was an aircard. Well I did have another kind of high speed internet for a while (till the b$#%S changed their system and I couldn't get the signal) and with them I did the wireless thing through the house and connected through linksys, so that software is on the computer. Well now I've moved and I live in a subdivision and this aircard has a feature that if it finds another connection better than itself it attaches my laptop to that. Somebody here has Linksys and ...dude...they've got a kickin high speed internet connection. Better than my aircard ever was. Should I track down the new neighbor and uhm...say thanks may I continue? Or oh crap, find a way to over-ride that feature and make the aircard use itself? Or just sit back fat and happy and remain a leech? (I like this one) I really do like having that aircard as it has come in handy when I've traveled and there has been no wireless about - so I don't want to switch to a broadband connection at the house just yet....tell y'all tell me I should...because leechs are scum. Don't mind being a leech. Don't want to be scum.

Carrots, I would try to find out your aircard's penchant for riding this neighbor's coattails causes said neighbor either a rise in rates or a drop in service.... if the former, the right thing to do is to offer to pay them for a percentage (probably cheaper than getting your own). If it causes a disruption or slowing of their service, then you should probably bite the bullet. Otherwise, I say ride it as long as you can. You're probably not the only one in the neighborhood doing it. And if you see strange cars parked along the streets with people tapping furiously on their laptops, you'll know you're not alone! LOL (NT) -- The Chief, 20:26:39 02/04/08 Mon
- I asked DH what he thought and he said that your neighbor is the one who didn't secure his network, so it's his own fault. LOL (NT) -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 19:50:11 02/06/08 Wed
Question about this, tho.... CAN you tell if someone is using your WiFi? Does it show on your computer or something? (NT) -- The Chief, 09:21:15 02/09/08 Sat
- I have high speed internet through cable, and I've got three computers, a tivo, three mouses, and one keyboard all vying for wireless. I'm pretty sure that all that slows me down. Although I'd happily share with Incarrottnito, I'd be pretty ticked off with anyone else mooching and slowing me down even more. (NT) -- Cece.. (It's no use hiding Incarrottnito. Your big Harm t-shirt will give you away!), 15:41:12 02/09/08 Sat
- Carrotts, it does slow down the machine. I don't have a password but I'm going to get one tomorrow. I realized this week that someone was tapping into my wireless. Sorry, my veggy friend, it's not polite to use someone's wireless signal without their permission. On the other hand, if you ask, you may make a new friend. And he may be 6'4", with hazel eyes and a body that won't quit with a melting smile. sigh! (NT) -- judi, 01:03:01 02/11/08 Mon
- Your neighbor should secure their network! I'd probably track them down and ask if it's okay. If it's not, tell them to secure their wireless network then. This is why I'd never do a wireless network, someone can tap into it and get into your computer if you don't secure it properly. (NT) -- Sarahsue--I love my wired network, it's worth the peace of mind, 12:31:54 02/11/08 Mon
- I have wireless and have it secured. If your neighbor did not secure theirs it is open to anyone whose computer picks up the signal. Your computer will pick up the closest to you. It is easy to secure a router so no one else can use it unless you tell them the password. (NT) -- Jeanaz8, 09:59:00 02/14/08 Thu
- On the DJE board, several of us stated that we've lost David's "Hey, come on in" greeting on IE and that some of us have an empty box with a red x . -- ED, 07:29:27 01/29/08 Tue [4]
Cindy suggested that possibly a setting had been changed that made the greeting disappear since the empty box is where the audio player is. How do we check if the setting is turned off? If there is a way of checking, maybe a "SEE HARM DRIVE" could be posted on the DJE board so the others with the same problem can correct it. Thanks in advance for any help

Block spam? -- CB, 12:23:16 01/16/08 Wed [11]
I could have my penis enlarged over a dozen times already (interesting since I don't have such a thing), could have gotten tons and tons of viagra and am the most popular girl to get bigger breasts. In other words: Spam.
I'm getting lots of spam lately and wonder if you guys had any idea left how to stop them.
Mostly in Outlook Express.
I have the spam blocker at my provider's on heavy but I still get at least about 5 spam emails a day in my outlook inbox.
My yahoo email gets spammed out great. They all go to spam right away so I never get to see them.
But I wanna know if you guys have any idea if there is an option in Outlook in which you can block spam.
I looked around but can't see anything about it.
Is there even such an option in Outlook?

- BTW, I've also found an option at the provider's where you can fill in which words in the title should be counted as spam. I entered lots of spam titles and yet, the still come through (e.g. 'Name suggests this site' or 'My friend suggested you look at this'.). (NT) -- CB, 12:26:40 01/16/08 Wed
- Is this Outlook or Outlook Express? In Outlook 2003 and later it has a built in Spam(Junk Mail) filter. Earlier versions does not have one would have to setup a rule to filter out based on words or email addresses. (NT) -- Hope, 14:44:44 01/16/08 Wed
- My cable company (internet provider) requires acceptance of an Outlook Express (you said it is the one causing you trouble) e-mail address to obtain their service. I hated it. I not only did not use it, I uninstalled it from my computer. Inside -- Jeanaz8, 08:39:17 01/17/08 Thu
- You can buy spam filter software. My laptop came with antivirus/antispam software that was pretty good about catching spam email that my ISP didn't catch. This particular software ran in Outlook Express. I don't use my laptop much, so I can't tell you off the top of my head what the software was, but I know there are lots of different brands that are good. All of you who hate Vista would love it! It one of those with the ‘cool’ Mac guy & the ‘nerdy’ Windows guy. Anyway, the Windows guy is touting the Vista operating system. He tells you to ‘give’ Vista whatever it NEEDS…new printer, more money, etc., etc. The Mac guy leans in & says, “Wow, you really like Vista.” The Windows guy covers the mic & says, “Not really, I changed back to XP yesterday.”
I howled after listening to all of you ‘IBM’ clone types complaining about Vista. You gotta love the Mac commercials!!! Go Apple!!!

- Usually a computer suddenly shutting down means it is overheating. Listen to see if you can hear the fan going. If not, pop open the case and gently blow some canned air in there to see if maybe the fan's stuck. If it is the cooling fan, you can get that replaced pretty easily. (NT) -- Sarahsue, 20:56:45 12/04/07 Tue

- I had a problem with mine old laptop overheating and took it in. The computer repair place showed me how to use canned compressed air to blow on the cooling fan on the bottom and then the heatsink which is on the side or the back. A lot of dust will blow out of both places. Keep the top closed so you do not hit the screen with the air accidently. I do this now about every 2 months and have not had the problem since. You can also blow out the dust and othe stuff from the keyboard, just be sure to cover your screen. (NT) -- Jeanaz8, 04:35:48 12/15/07 Sat

- Well, if you could figure out what you used before, that would probably help. LOL Look where all your programs are stored (under "All Programs" in XP (not sure if it's the same in Vista) and look for software that sounds like it could be used for photos. Then open that software and look for something like settings, options, preferences, etc. Hopefully, there is an option to make that software be the default for all picture files, or files that end with jpg, bmp, etc. (NT) -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 13:14:26 11/18/07 Sun

- Hope you don't mind a lurker chiming in :) I use XP so I don't know if this works in Vista but I figure it’s worth a try! Right-click on the photo and select "Open with". This should display a short list of common programs and, at the bottom, will give you an option to "Choose program". If the program you want is in the short list, select it from there. If not, select “Choose program” and you will get a window that shows a list of Recommended programs to choose from. It also gives you an option to select to always use that program to open that type of file. My pictures open, by default, in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer that’s part of XP. BIG PROBLEM HELP ! -- Laurence, 20:24:45 11/09/07 Fri [5]
I'm at my 2nd laptop.
When I was on internet, at a given time, about 20 minutes or less, or 1 hour, well at any time, I was disconnected from internet, in having a message who appeared : " you have been disconnected " " yes " " no " .
I had to click of course, on " yes " and have to close internet, so I could re - connect.
It never was found what it was. I changed my laptop, 1, or 2 years ago, and it's re - biginning. I'm VERY AFRAID.
PLEASE HELP ME !

- I don't think you have to be afraid. Are you on wireless? Often when I boot up, I don't get instant connection on my laptop, and have to click on a box. Then connection is made. When I'm on my wireless desktop, and I get disconnected, I first check the old computer (not wireless) to see if the my server is down. If I can go online on the old computer, but not the wireless, I just disconnect AND unplug the wireless router, and then reconnect and plug back in. Then I get connected again.
