Subject: A question

This is a super-easy question, I'm sure, for anyone with a little techno-savvy (which doesn't include me, as you will see!). Here's the scoop: I installed a program from a CD-ROM. All went fine. It asked me where I wanted it (or some such as that). There was a list of options, but the only one I recognized was the start-up menu. I thought that would put it on the bar you hit to go find programs that you don't use enough to put on the desktop. Nope. Now when I turn on the computer, the welcome screen to the new program ends up all over the desktop, instead of my nice country field wallpaper. (The new program is also an icon on the desktop.) Everything works fine, and I can cancel out the program to do other stuff, but how do I get it off the middle of the screen every time I turn it on? I still want the program, but I don't want it in my face whenever I turn on the machine. (See how little I know about computers?) Can anyone tell me how to rearrange this? Many thanks in advance!

[> It sounds like you put it in the "Startup" folder and not the Start Menu. Things in the startup folder open when you start up the computer. If I'm not mistaken, anything you install will automatically be listed in the "All Programs" section of your start menu, you shouldn't have to actually put it there. There may be an easy way, but without looking at your computer, I can't say for sure. You'd be safe deleting shortcuts, but if you try to move the actual program, it may not know where to look for its files after that.

If I were you, I'd just go into "Add and Remove Programs" (it's in your Control Panel) and uninstall it. Then reinstall it and let it put it where it wants to put it (which will probably be somewhere on your C drive). Then when you want to run it, just go to "All Programs" on your start menu and it should be there. As a general rule I don't try to override the location when I'm installing programs, but that's just me. I can always put a shortcut icon anywhere I want it to be without moving the program.

[> [> I don't know if this is right or not- but when I install- I check that it goes to Cdrive/ programs and leave well enough alone if it doesn't do that - then I put it there. -- chris k - who thinks that idea of remove it and start over sounds like something I could accomplish- lol., 06:38:38 04/06/07 Fri [1]

[> Well, I know the word "start" was there somewhere! I should be able to manage the remove-reinstall parts. Question on that, though--if I've already registered as a user for the CD-ROM (it was from a program I bought), do I have to re-register when I reinstall? -- Deemus (grateful for any help I can get!), 09:00:23 04/06/07 Fri [1]

[> [> Probably not. It might depend on what the purpose of the registration is. You could try to register again and it might tell you you've already registered. Or you could try not registering again and see if you come across any problems. A lot of the time they only want you to register so they can send you sales promotions when your software goes out of date the following month. LOL -- JJ (Ronda), 11:08:55 04/06/07 Fri [1]
