03.10 - IPA - Helping candidates in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Ului
The Category 3 storm tore through the Mackay and Whitsunday area on Sunday with winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour, causing major power outages with more than 55,000 people losing electricity. About 12,500 people are still without power, which may not be restored until the end of the week.
This has affected staff at IPA Job Services Australia in Mackay and in spite of damage and power outages at some of their own homes the team are offering support to candidates less fortunate than themselves.
With power outages continuing into a forth day the team recognised that many of job seekers on their case load may be in distress and struggling with essential supplies and shelter.
They researched what support and assistance is being provided by the government and local community organisations, to assist people with their emergency needs; the unexpected basic costs for food and water, clothing, medical supplies or accommodation caused by the disaster.
They then contacted candidates to see if they were ok, if they could benefit from the assistance on offer and gave them advice on how to access the help.
“Recovery centres have been set up and there is emergency funding available. We just want to make sure that candidates who need that support know where to go and how to get it,” said Jo-Ann Sologinkin, Employment Coach
“And by letting them know what ID they will need to claim the support, hopefully it will make it less traumatic for them.”
One stream four candidate was very stressed, he and his wife are both registered with the branch, they have two young children and due to the lack of electricity he has just been forced to throw out the last of the food in his fridge with no money to replace it. He came into the branch and was given a $100 food voucher to cater for his families immediate needs.
