I think the point that Saint-Exupery is trying to get across is that with age, one loses their imagination and ability to look beyond the basic details. The innocence of the child is that they can imagine something that is not possible at all, like a boa swallowing an elephant. I agree that there is a beauty in the innocence for a child, and it is very depressing that once you are an adult you lose this beautiful innocence. I actually did this experiment with my little sister, she said it was a turtle.. but then again, she is a girl so she doesn't really think about boas swallowing elephants.
