Well, I always notice the eyes and mouth of the snake, so it can't be a hat...
But yes, the loss of preception has a lot to do with this. It is not so much the fact that the adults see the hat, it is the fact that they don't see the snake. Adults have totally lost the ability to see things in terms other then realism, and that is the problem I think.
