I agree that the surname Caudill is not derived from the spanish word for dictator or 'Caudillo'. My distant cousin, the late author and Kentucky Historian Harry Caudill, speculated that that might be be the origin of the name and was known to theorize that Mulungeons (sp?) were the descendants of shipwrecked Spanish sailors. (My belief: dark skinned mountain people with blue eyes are simply people of mixed race origins). As a 20 year veteran of a large daily newspaper, I have looked into our genealogy and my conclusion is that the name is Scottish in origin and can also be found throughout Great Britain. In the Book of British surnames, 'Caudill' is listed as the name for an alcoholic beverage or for an alcoholic. Some believe that Caudill is a derivation of the french name but morphed into different spellings and pronunciations as those bearing the names settled into Great Britain and North America.
