Subject: Because of some prejudices and other factors...
In reply to: Didi 's message, "Why is there so little contact between the VECO and the VUB students" on 10:10:34 03/20/00 Mon

We started to see eachother a while ago, we even planned some events.. but it seemed to have fallen through.

There are also some physical reasons:

Until two years ago all our classes were physically on the VUB campus (buildings F&G, B&C). Now we have some classes there and now have most of them in our new building (Schoofslaan(?sp)). We used to ALWAYS hand out in the Caf or Self Study... now we are always in our very own Student Lounge (open to VUB students as well by the way), and in around the corner at TimeSquare... and the computer 'lab' seems to be a popular hangout.

The last time we tried to do something with the VUB (the Cuiss-Tax), we were, to say the least, the laughing stock of the crowd. We didnt drink beer like them and didnt seem as imposing. We were there to have a good time and try and particpate. With a mix of circumstances there was an injury, the same few people got tired... so we packed up and all went away. The VUB students didnt seem to mind at all.

As I mentioned in the subject, there are also some prejudices... both ways. First and foremost VUB students see us as a small group of rich kids. In SOME cases that is absolutely true. There are the sons and daughters of some of the most influential people in Belgium that have gone/are going to our college. SOME of them have a totally horrible attitutude of being stuck up and arrogant... others are totally down to Earth.

Nonetheless there are also students that attend Vesalius that are on scholarships, that are on student aid... that cant afford to attend parties or go out on the town.

This is a very similar situation to the VUB. You CANNOT hide the fact that some students of the VUB (and faculty by the way) drive around in Porsches, LOTUS', BMWs, etc etc....

So what can/could be done? The issue of closer relations with the VUB is almost always a moote point in the Vesalius Student Government (VSG) agenda. We plan it in... but little is done. We have tons of things to worry about than things like VUB-VeCo relations. What Im trying to say is that it is always nice to say "we will try and organize parties together"... but that has never worked out. Only the Oceade parties (which we were supposed to do also this semester with VUB/ULB) have worked... and this semester we never got any more info about it.

So... DIDI... you want to converse in English with us? I think that is a GREAT idea. What could we do? Realistically? Conversation groups? Bilateral classes where we find out about each other's cultures? I could propose that... have a class together...

But let me warn you about one thing... hehe... there over 300 Vesalius Students... of which I dare say more than 30-40 speak English as a mother tongue/fluently. Everyone around here is good at English (sometimes) but Im not TOTALLY sure if you want to come and converse with people whose language is not English anyway! That was just a small warning though... not a put off.

If you can propose something realistic, that could appeal to a very difficult crowd (motivating these guys is like trying to get a herd of horses to drink water), I will be the first to bring forward a joint plan...

I hope to hear more input from EVERYONE about VUB-VeCo relations... we can't ignore our neighbors! ;-)
