Subject: From D. Drane: INFO ABOUT BOTTLE TREES from AUSTRALIA
In reply to: Debbie 's message, "INFO ABOUT BOTTLE TREES from AUSTRALIA" on 23:28:21 06/12/07 Tue

Debbie: Thanks for your note to Beth at the USAdeepsouth.com website. I've written several articles that appear there, at least one about bottle trees. I'll try to answer the questions you asked. But, remember, these are only my opinions, which is about all I have to offer.

You asked about whether painting bottles is acceptable, about plastic bottles or vases and jars and how to re-gather spirits that escape when one breaks.

First off, there is no such thing as an unacceptable or inappropriate item placed on a bottle tree. I have one friend (a town alderman/councilman) who has a 'bottle tree' with the following on it: The frame from a Schwinn racing bicycle that I gave him, telephone pole insulators, a rusted tire tool, at least one shoe, a turtle shell and an assortment of other stuff he wanted on his tree. The key is 'what he wanted'. And that's your key as well. The neat thing about bottle trees is that they are to be personalized with whatever matches your personality and your whims. Never give a moment's thought to what a neighbor or occasional visitor to your back yard might think about what's on your tree. Whose tree is it anyway? Neighbors and friends are expendable and replaceable......bottle trees are not.

Although I only have glass on my trees, if I want to add an old wooden boat paddle tomorrow, that's exactly what I'll do.

Plastic, vases, jars........it's your option. A bottle tree, in my estimation, is never complete and never finished. This week I replaced four bottles with some I like better. I didn't know it starting out, but they're works in never-ending progress. Saying 'I'm done" is a bottle tree sacrilege.

I've got some bottles that I initially thought were colored glass.....but they turned out to be stained or painted or overlaid with stuff that faded over several years time. If a friend gives you a bottle, there's an unwritten rule that you MUST display it on your tree, if only for as long as it takes the friend to forget she gave it to you. Then you can replace it if you're amind to (amind to means if you feel like it....in the USA South).

As far as how to regather or recapture spirits that might escape if a bottle breaks, I have two points to make. The first point is that while I had a roof replaced after hurricane Katrina and lost a couple of large pine trees, not a single bottle was lost or disturbed during those tremendous inland winds. I live about 185 miles inland from the Gulf Coast but we had some big winds. The second point is.....if you should somehow find a broken bottle, the spirits nesting inside that bottle will not venture far from the tree and will always return within a day, typically before daylight. They have no spirit of adventure and quickly come to find comfort in the bottle. Therefore, they'll seek the comfort of another bottle of similar color and the one less filled. And it's well known that spirits that become displaced by whatever means, will NOT return to the residence from which they were originally coaxed. Evil spirits can penetrate a residence in an outward direction only. They have no ability to penetrate from the outside. They get inside in the first place in the clothing or hearts of the human occupants.

I hope this answers some of your concerns.
