they are called quilting guilds (many with membership numbering in the 100's) and yes they are alive and well, as is the art of quilting.

we dedicated quilters spend lots of money on our hobby every year buying fabric, batting, thread, quilting stencils, etc.

we go to quilt shows in other towns and states, buy quilting magazines, videos, and DVD's, talk with each other on quilting sites online, and have a wonderful time.

we also make lots of quilts for various charities every year, some of which are auctioned off on E-bay.

yes, i'm a quilter. my grandmother quilted, sewed,crochetted, and tatted. When she passed on my aunt got all her quilts and my mother got the crochetted doilies, tableclothes, and bedspread. she made many pieces for sale, and some of them still had the price tags.
my daughter has them now, along with some of my mother's aprons.
