It was known by all who knew the Walton Family that Zeb
and Esther's boys while both being hard working, dependable
and respectful, were still different in many ways.
Ben, the oldest, was happy in school, liked to study and
always had some type of business venture going. In fact,
he used to help Mr. Godsey keep his books at the store.
Ben wanted to be a Banker when he grew up. Ben was also
a regular attendee at the Waltons Mountain Baptist Church.

Young John on the other hand, loved the outdoors. Don't misunderstand, John was also a good student in his own right. He paid attention most of the time in class and always had his lessons in on time. But, every chance he got, John was working in the mill or up on the mountain cutting timber with his Pa. While John loved having a good time, he was a serious lad in many ways too. For instance, he knew the value of a dollar just like Ben and what's more, it was often said of young John Walton, he was a workin fool when it came to just about any thing working with his hands. John too was a fair hand at book keeping when he needed to be. He always said he would be happy to spend his years on Waltons Mountain. He wanted to cut timber, get married and have a house full of kids and build his home up on Waltons Mountain. He knew just the spot too. It was on the summit just above his Granddaddy's old place where the chimney still stood. It had a sweeping view of the valley below and the Rockfish River. Yes, that was John's dream for some day. Little did John know then that his some day was moving into the area in the form of a young girl named Olivia. John met her one Summer afternoon while delivering firewood to the new family that just moved to the area from Albereen.

Olivia was a pretty thing, about 4 years younger than John and the eldest girl in her family. She had pretty red hair and was wise beyond her years. The two became fast friends. Olivia and her family were strong Baptists like his mother. This was a cross roads time in young John's life in that he was all of 19 years old now and had never had more than a passing fancy for any girl or the Baptist Church for that matter. But Olivia was different. She wasn't uppity or holier than thou like those pinch faced girls his Ma was always trying to match him up with from the church. She was easy to talk to, really cared when he told her about his plans for a house on the mountain and what's more, she came to love the mountain as much as he did. No, this was a special girl and before John knew it, they were much more than just friends.

Before Olivia, John was more interested in fishing, playing cards, going to dances and sampling a little of Judge Baldwin's recipe now and then. Many was the Sunday that John would be strolling past the Baptist Church with fishing pole in hand listening to the tune of Shall We Gather at the River or coming by just after with a stringer of fish only to be met with the disapproving eyes of the the faithful gathered outside after services, including those of Olivia's mother and even his own. Another set eyes that followed him were those of young Olivia and they were far from dissaproving. Although Olivia had a deep faith in God and loved being part of the Baptist Congregation, there was something about John Walton that just took her breath away.

Well, like the old saying goes, opposits attract and that was the case with John and Olivia. While John Walton was held in high regard by everyone in the community, the same wsa not so when it came to Olivia's parents. Her mother often referred to hims as "That heathen Walton boy." much to the dismay of Esther Walton. Because of Olivia's parents disapproval of John the two had to meet without her parent's knowledge. Often, Olivia would start for Wednesay night prayer meeting and end up walking with John. John spent all his spare time with Livvy. Long walks, picinics by Drucilla's Pond and hikes up the mountain. These were days they would always remember.

The secret dates and meetings with an occasional dinner at the Walton home, went on for about a year when the two decided it was time to marry. John popped the question to Livvey on a Sunday evening down by Drucilla's Pond, a favorite place of theirs to go on picinics. Without hesitaton, Olivia said yes. This was a dream come true for both but presented an interesting problem. How would they get Olivia's parents permission. After all, she was only 16 years old and John was now 20. They knew permission would never be given, so John suggested they both elope.

At first, Olivia didn't want to do this. She wanted a proper wedding at church, with a white dress and all. But she wanted to be Mrs. John Walton more than anything. So, she agreed. They would run off and get married. JV

Grandpa Walton's Grave site -- vy, 12:11:08 04/23/08 Wed [1]
Saw "The Empty Nest" again today, and it always gets to me. The location of Grandpa's grave was magnificent with a gorgeous view, but has anyone noticed that in later episodes it seems to have changed location to a not as scenic site? Too bad.

Hi Everyone,

I have been away from the forum for a while. I have managed to watch all the seasons up through season 5. I'm amazed that seasons 6 & 7 came out so soon. I've kind of lost track since my mom passed away this last December 4. Here's my connundrum...I'm not sure I am ever going to be able to watch the series again. We watched the Waltons as a family when the show started in 1972 and Olivia Walton reminds me so much of my mom, just the lady she was. As much as I love the show, it's just too hard to watch it as a single (divorced) adult with no children of my own now because it brings back memories of my mom and all her brothers and sisters who have passed away within the last five years and the wonderful family times we had together growing up in the 60's and 70's.

I probably could watch the specials if Warner ever puts them on DVD...I lost track of the show during my college years and after I got out and the specials seem to be about happy times.

Season 7 with Grandpa passing away and Olivia leaving because of TB...I'm not sure I could watch that.

I would appreciate your prayers

Hello Everyone....!
Has anyone noticed that as the Seasons progress, John Walton, (Ralph Waite) develops more of a temper. I am always surprised when I see him react this way.... last night I watched an episode (Ben leaves home and goes to work for the Murdocks) where he was yelling at Mary Ellen and Olivia, to get dinner on the table. Just expressing my surprise, it just always seems so uncharacteristic.
Are you surprised at something an actor does in an episode that seems out of character?

My favorite characters are Emily and Mamie Baldwin, and I would like to know which episode features John-Boy writing a story based on Miss Emily's fond memories of Ashley Longworth kissing her in a shower of golden maple leaves. I have seen that episode several times, but cannot remember the name of it and can't find a clue to it in the episode guide. Please help!

My niece was visiting with her baby last week, and of course I turned on the TV for The Waltons in the morning. She mentioned that she had started purchasing the DVDs and was watching them. She had all kinds of questions--don't ask me how it's possible, but she had no idea that I'm a Waltons nerd (that's what my friends affectionately call me). She loved the musical Mother's Day card I got last year and kept opening the card to play it. Well, you can only imagine the joy I feel knowing that the next generation is discovering The Waltons on their own through the DVDs!

I wanted to let you know that I've been blogging regularly on my website now, and much of it is writing-related (although it's also heavy on family, relationships, and hopefully inspiration), so you writers might want to check it out: www.klonicki.com/blog

Hello Everyone! I need a little clarification. I know that the Baldwin Sisters mentioned being of the "Episcopal Persuasion"(quoted)from earlier episodes. Last night I watched 'The Baptism' and the Baldwins Sisters were very excited that a well known preacher was coming to preach for 'The Revival' for the Baptist Church. Did I miss something? I must have. Do you have details?

I am wondering if anyone from the forum attended Richard Thomas' play this past week-end here in KC. If I hadn't of already taken in the play twice - in different cities - I would have gone again. It looks like George Wendt is no longer a part of the tour, but I could be wrong.

Hi, I watching "The Typewriter" the other night. Grandpa mentions Amy. She died of scarlet fever. It's never really explained who Amy is. But in another episode, Grandma mentions bearing three children. I'm guessing they would be John, Benjamin (who died in the war) and then maybe Amy?

This morning on Hallmark The Waltons episode was "The Milestone". Can someone tell me what season that one is from?

Also caught something funny. When Jim-Bob is trying to forge his Mama's signature on a job application at the desk in the house and Jason catches him. Jason picks up an old piece of paper that Olivia had started a letter to John-boy and reads it. Jim-Bob had just been looking at it to see how to write her name.
Why would Olivia sign "Olivia" on a letter to John-Boy instead of signing it Mama. Just a cute observation here.

Did you guys hear it? There was a Waltons' reference on Dancing With the Stars just a few minutes ago! The host, Tom, was listing all the professional dancers who were going to do a number together. It was getting kind of sing-songy, so at the end he said, "And John-Boy and Mary Ellen." How cool!

This is probably a crazy question, but I have always wondered if Earl Hamner Jr. was called Earl-boy as a child. On Spencer's Mountain the oldest is Clay-boy and then of course John-boy later on. Just wondered if anyone knew the answer to that. Thanks
