I understand your point and agree with you...to a certain extent. Swimming should be fun and enjoyable BUT if all a swimmer sees the sport as is a way to make friends or something to keep them busy after school then this whole CARIFTA issue should be of no concern to them. Swimming is a COMPETITIVE sport, why train your butt off day in and day out for no reason! If you want to make friends and keep busy after school then join Brownies or an art club!! If you swim just for the excercise then stay out of the discussions about COMPETITIVE swimming!!
The argument here (from what I've read, it's not my argument) is that swimmers who SHOULD have been named to the team were over looked and feel cheated. I don't think anyone has once mentioned anything negative about those swimmers who didn't make the team.
Also the EXCEPTIONAL swimmers are those who love the sport AND want to WIN...those things go hand in hand. And you are right winning is not everything, but wanting to win is what really separates the good swimmers from the EXCEPTIONAL ones.
I do agree that there are parents who put too much pressure on their children (I see them coaching from the stands) and that should stop. However, not all parents are that way. I am lucky enough to have parents who understand that I am the swimmer and therefore I should know what I'm doing. BUT if parents feel that their children are being cheated or treated unfairly then they have every right to step in. You don't expect the children to stand up to the BSF on their own do you?
