Would love the opportunity to have them here - rather than have to fly to a different region just for grade exams. Or are there any schools that might consider setting it up and allowing others to participate? Think it would be great!

- Be a team and eat healthier and get active with her. -- :), 08:43:57 05/15/12 Tue
- Focus on eating healthy to fuel your muscles and workouts. Limit sugar and refined flour & grains. Talk to her about nutrients in food and how the vitamins and minerals are important for growing bodies. Check your own food intake to make sure you are setting a good example and serving plenty of fruit, veggies, lean meats, healthy fats, and whole grains. (NT) -- nutritionist mom, 09:10:06 05/15/12 Tue
- Question #1 - does your pediatrician feel she is overweight? If not, don't change anything! My DD also was not the same body "type" as other dancers at that age, she is now the fittest and has more muscle mass than other girls in her age group - she is not petite, but is proportioned. More inside... -- Mom knows best, 09:20:09 05/15/12 Tue
- If SHE is the one worrying about it, you need to address it with her (and her pediatrician). I agree with the above advice to focus on health - healthy eating, healthy levels of activity. -- don't let her focus only on body appearance, 09:24:46 05/15/12 Tue
- This is also an age when, depending on genetics, some kids can be "fluffier" than others in anticipation of growth spurt and/or puberty. Tread lightly, though, messages from mom about her body are taken to heart. -- Mom of a chubby youngster who grew into a slender teen, 09:26:34 05/15/12 Tue

- My dd was chunky at this age too. She played soccer, danced, swim team, soft ball. As she got older she thinned without any intervention. By 6th or 7th grade many of her super slim friends had filled out and were much bigger than her. At 18 (and still athletic) she is still the slim one. (NT) -- give it time, 04:30:31 05/16/12 Wed
- Agree have to look at your families genetic makeup Are you all super thin? Some IDers are like skin and bone and my dd isn't Does she eat lots of vegies and fruit and little carbs? Use this to focus on healthy eating ! Even pediatricians don't seem to have a handle on the fact that they gain weight before a big growth spurt. (NT) -- Agree be careful. Make light of it and she will follow, 10:43:07 05/16/12 Wed
- To follow up on that - pediatrician made a slight suggestion to my daughter who is very solid and has a huge muscle mass.- hubbys family makeup-- as i think she did to all -I laughed at it so my dd didn't take it to heart She still is solid but has a beautiful wastline (NT) -- She will never be thin but she is still beautiful!, 10:50:05 05/16/12 Wed
- I don't think that there is any valid reason for a -healthy- eight year old to be over weight. Obesity is a disease which causes a jhost of horrible conditions and illnessses. Get things on the right track now. Be the example, live the life that you want for your child. Make healthy positive choices everyday. ... -- I worry about this...., 11:05:04 05/16/12 Wed

- I wasn't there but I'm guessing it was Joan Cass (saw her name on the AD list). She is amazing, especially with the younger dancers, making them feel so comfortable. (NT) -- Wish more ADs were like her!, 18:30:20 05/13/12 Sun
- Joan McNiff Cass (NT) -- ......, 19:03:24 05/13/12 Sun
- Joan McNiff Cass is one of the most classy Ladies of Irish Dance. She was there when it was all organized here in the States. She is always such a gracious and lovely lady. She is the heart of Irish Dance. (NT) -- Love. Her., 19:35:49 05/13/12 Sun
- Every feis she has a smile for each dancer. She is truly engaged and supportive to all. The funny thing is, I have never spoken to her. (NT) -- Thankful for AD like her !, 19:49:35 05/13/12 Sun
- Joan has been known to be...not so nice as well. My daughters first novice feis she kept them on stage and told them that since no one was on time she would only give out first place to the one dancer who actually danced on time. (NT) -- DDs Mom, 04:37:58 05/14/12 Mon
- Yes, but by novice you should know your timing. I think its appropriate at some point to expect the kids to know what they are doing and novice is that level. Good for Joan! She is nice and great, but thankful she doesn't just look the other way, but hold kids to a standard. (NT) -- mom, 04:40:42 05/14/12 Mon
- Do you mean that their timing was off, or they arrived late? (NT) -- If arrived late, unless they were coming from another stage, it's understandable., 07:29:00 05/14/12 Mon
- I don't think that telling novices they can't get first place if they're off time would qualify as not-nice. It's to be expected that you should not be able to win if you're off time. Joan is a lovely and classy lady, and is always nice. (NT) -- imho, 07:50:11 05/14/12 Mon
- The truth is often hard to take, but it was really nice of her to explain to them the importance of timing - it probably made more of an impact than if she had just written timing on the marks. It probably helped most if not all of those girls in the long run. How many judges actually would make the effort to give this valuable feedback? (NT) -- dm, 10:25:52 05/14/12 Mon
- How were so many kids in novice with timing issues? Only one dancer in the novice comp could dance on time? The judge must have been as shocked as I am causing her to place only the 1. Kind of her to explain to the kids. (NT) -- That IS being nice, 11:11:45 05/14/12 Mon
- That was NOT Joan Cass.My dd was in the same comp. It happened several years ago (I can't believe youre still whining about it) & the judge that took the time to bring your dd (and mine) out onto the stage & explain why she did what she did and then explain the importance of timing is MILES HIGH in my eyes, (NT) -- She didn't owe anyone an explanation.YOU OBVIOUSLY MISSED THE POINT AND THE GIFT!, 09:33:24 05/15/12 Tue
- You have got to be kidding me?!? A judge takes the time to bring your daughters back up on the stage and explain the importance of one of the basic elements in Irish Dancing and you have the temerity to complain?!?! I would have made my dd write her a thank you note!! That judge gave your dd something most dancers never ever receive. (NT) -- I can't believe that you wouldnt be singing her praises! - Judges Dont like to look at dirty socks or stained socks. They feel if you can afford a mordern ID costume then you can afford a brand new pair of 7 dollar socks . (NT) -- Feis Mom, 07:09:50 05/13/12 Sun
- Maybe the socks were too high. Sometimes younger girls wear them very high, just below the knee. Judges seem to prefer them "champ height" which are shorter showing the more of the calf. (NT) -- oldtimer, 08:03:36 05/13/12 Sun
- Although there is one judge in our region for whom it seems "socks" is one of his pet peeves (usually when falling down), it could have been simply a way for the judge to differentiate your dancer from others. As in: "the one with the crystal socks" abbreviated to simply "socks". (NT) -- JMO, 10:35:54 05/13/12 Sun

When a feis has a perpetual trophy for 4hands, trad sets, etc, how does the scoring work? Is it like champ scoring where a 1st=100 points, 2nd=75 points, 3rd=65 points, a tie splits the difference, and most points wins?

- When my son was in grades, he always did slip jig. TC felt that all her dancers should learn all the steps, so the boys learned light and slip jigs, along with reels and hornpipes. Great for foot work. (NT) -- not unusual, 20:03:53 05/08/12 Tue
- Technically there's no rule against boys in slip jig, so although most boys don't do it, it's certainly allowed. Agree with above poster, it can't do anything but make them better dancers. (NT) -- -, 20:37:33 05/08/12 Tue
- I wish this was accepted generally when i was dancing in grades. Or they should do them in champs. (NT) -- All dancers should know all dances I think., 22:52:44 05/08/12 Tue
- Just to clarify I was not thinking it was a bad thing they were in the comp. just have never seen it. In my daughters school the boys are not allowed to do it and thought maybe there was a change. (NT) -- OP, 04:45:43 05/09/12 Wed

- Leg Length Discrepancy -- Mom, 10:47:31 05/08/12 Tue
Has anyone dealt with this? I mentioned it to DD's pediatrician but she took a quick look and said no discrepancy. However, one side of pelvis is higher than the other, knee cap is higher and dancer walks with one foot turned out and one points straight ahead. Also, she appears to limp when she runs (others have mentioned the limping to me). It could be an apparent discrepancy as opposed to an actual difference in the length of her legs. She can't stand with both knees straight unless one is hyperextended. Can it be corrected?

- I know of a dancer in our school that had this issue. She still dances years later, but needed to see doctor and PT to work with the situation. (NT) -- I would seek a second opinion, 11:35:04 05/08/12 Tue
- I'll second the recommendation to check her for scoliosis, and also recommend that regardless of that outcome she might benefit from seeing a good chiropractor. DD had a similar "apparent discrepancy" (though it did NOT turn out to be scoliosis) that has gone away after a few weeks of frequent adjustments. She sees the chiro twice a week for now. (NT) -- -, 12:11:19 05/08/12 Tue

- Everyone is shorter on one side...it is the degree of the discrepancy that is the issue. I am 3/4 of an inch shorter on my left side and must wear an orthotic in my left shoe. Discovered this once I developed bursitis at 22! See an orthopedic doctor and get her fitted for an orthotic. Works wonders! (NT) -- Mom, 13:06:31 05/08/12 Tue
- Issue is sometimes muscular. I would see an orthopedist with a specialty in sports medicine. (NT) -- NT, 14:18:57 05/08/12 Tue
- Trust your gut. If your ped isn't listening and you're concerned, seek a second opinion. I wish I had years ago. :( (NT) -- Mother knows best ;), 20:05:33 05/08/12 Tue
- We know a friend who's daughter started to notice that one side was shorter and it turned out she has a disease where one side of the body doesn't grow like the other. Its not common, but always good to investigate further if your ped. won't look into it. (NT) -- mom, 04:41:27 05/09/12 Wed
- I have the same thing -- more inside, 06:04:28 05/09/12 Wed
- My DD had one leg longer than the other for several years, even had to put her straps at different lengths when riding horses; nicely she outgrew this. - Attn: Creative ID Moms: need some ideas for framing/shadowboxing dance dress -- MrsUrbanski, 07:08:46 05/08/12 Tue
Hi! My daughter, a retired dancer, is moving out-of-state for a career relocation. This means a "big-girl" (excuse the term but I AM a mom) apartment. This means furnishings and accessorizing. Wall hangings. We have saved her favorite solo dress of all time and she would like to either frame or shadowbox it to hang on a wall. Has anyone ever done this?? Can it be a DYI or should I seek a professional??? Any ideas would be so helpful and greatly appreciated. My email address is included just in case.... Thanks again,

- Usually wedding dress places might offer this service, if you want it "truly" preserved from yellowing etc. Try looking on Pinterest for "dress hanging" and i bet you would see some creative ideas! (NT) -- You might need to get a custom box frame made if it's real big., 07:13:32 05/08/12 Tue
- I'm trying to figure out the same thing; my husband took the dress to a framing place and the price was almost as much as the dress, so we didn't do that. I DO remember seeing them frame a dress on that old TLC show Trading Spaces, so I know it can be done much more economically(more) -- another retired mom, 08:03:22 05/08/12 Tue
- I don't have any advice, but have seen this done with children's jeans (thus the tub downstairs with all my kids baby jeans still in it). If you do figure something out, please share a picture! Good luck. (NT) -- mom, 08:19:42 05/08/12 Tue
- Check to see if there is a special type of glass you can get for the frame to prevent fading. Then see if with that, you can do it yourself to save?/ (NT) -- mom, 09:50:11 05/08/12 Tue

Are you making your summertime feis plans?? Well, let me help you. The syllabus for Catskill Mtn feis has been posted to www.catskillfeis.com. Online entries will be available later this week. I’ll have printed syllabus at our vendor table and we can answer any and all questions either at our vendor table, or by email or please join our Facebook page, Catskill Mtn Feis. We’ve got lots of fun things planned (hint, read the syllabus) as well as some fantastic raffle prizes. This is an outdoor feis so please feel free to bring tents and chairs….there are also lots of picnic tables available. The Blackthorne resort has, once again, given our feis access to all amenities including the pool, pony rides, playground etc. Food will be available for purchase so coolers will not be permitted on the feisgrounds…You can still bring a cooler as long as you leave it in your car. We are working out the details for an after-the-feis Jive dance contest with Peter McKiernan…more details to follow. And, of course, the evening will be topped off with the dance contest / party at the Blackthorne pub. All are invited and we hope to see you all there!

I'm just wondering if they just began to accept entries 2 weeks ago, should I be paying a late fee. Just trying to hold on to some $$. lol Any thoughts would be appreciated.

- Stage Schedules for grades.... -- Grade Mom, 12:38:59 05/01/12 Tue
Question to "stage schedulers"...as with most parents of children in grades the biggest conversation that we seem to have feis after feis is why our dancers must dance on the same stage with the same judge? I realize the time and effort that goes into planning a feis and getting the schedule just right but we would appreciate either the oppurtunity to have our dancers switch stages atleast for half of their dances or if that is not feasible atleast have the judges switch. Please take our thoughts into consideration when planning your next feis! Thanks.

- I agree especially if you get a judge that does not like your DD, you have a better chance of placing if you have a different judge for each round. (NT) -- NT, 16:06:49 05/01/12 Tue
- In MidAmerica, the most common plan is to have dancers stay on one stage, and rotate the judges. This does make the stages run more slowly, and we get those complaints. But it's more efficient to move a few judges than to move hundreds of dancers. As the stage schedule maker for our feis, I agree that it is an art! (NT) -- anyone want the job?, 16:08:57 05/01/12 Tue
- You can rotate the stages, but then you need to have more dances in between to allow time to switch stages. While this is nice, then it makes the day longer and more crowded because people have to wait around for the next dance. Then you get those kind of complaints too. Just know that its not an easy thing. If you... -- mom, 17:23:22 05/01/12 Tue
- That always bugged me in grades when we had the same judge for every dance (NT) -- grrr :), 18:36:02 05/01/12 Tue
- I prefer them doing there dances in a row instead of when they do all reels, lj, sj,etc. Otherwise there is too much time waiting between dances and with multiple dances it can be a challenge. (NT) -- ------, 18:37:44 05/01/12 Tue
- CNY is actually the first time we encountered this. We usually DO end up on different stages and it's really tough to manage. Sometimes you have to decide which of two dances to do because they occur at the same time. I liked not having to wait around at CNY - I just wish 2 judges were switching off. (NT) -- --, 19:04:53 05/01/12 Tue
- Many of you are overlooking that PC and OC dancers have the same judges for all of their rounds, too. There is no rotation or change of stages for each round. - Advice please. -- ., 14:49:21 04/30/12 Mon
DD is U11 prelim. Has been for almost exactly two years. In that amount of time, has done 26 feisanna. (Question one--is that a "good" amount of feisanna for this level?) She has not plaed at all at 10 of those (including the first 3, which she and I both absolutely expected). She has placed top 10 at 6 feisanna. The remaining 10, she has placed "middle of the pack." There has not been a real pattern to her placements (as in, not trending one way or the other, the higher placements are more sporadic than in a pattern). The big question--is this pretty typical of how it goes in prelim for awhile? She rocketed through grades with very little effort, and now, although she is working at it, is finding it very difficult that she is not getting on that podium. (Frankly, I know she can work a little harder, but I also wish she had not gone through grades so fast, because I think she did not learn the "basics" as well as she could have). Guess I am just looking to see if her experience is typical, so that I might be able to reasuure her. She is occasionally coming out with comments like "I guess I am not that good at Irish dance anymore," and I don't want her to have that kind of attitude. Thanks.

- My daughter was in prelim for 2 years and only had one placement during that time. She now has focused on the basics like turnout, cross and stamina. She has placed consistently the last 6 months in the top 6, including 1 first. Go back and ask TC for help with whatever the comments from judges say. (NT) -- your DD is still pretty young, so work out the basics., 14:58:05 04/30/12 Mon

- Some dancers, like yours, rocket through the grades and then get hung up for a bit in Prelim. Others, like mine, spend many years in the grades and then rocket through Prelim. They're all different, but they all get to OC eventually. I wish her good luck at her upcoming competitions. (NT) -- OC Mom, 20:48:29 04/30/12 Mon
- My DD was in prelim for 6 years. In 5 of those, she placed twice, in the last one, she placed 12 times in a row, which we really enjoyed because it was such a long time in coming. My DS was in prelim almost 2 years and placed 3 times. Experiences do vary. But my DD stuck with it because she loves ID, she's in champ now and qualified for Nats at her O (NT) -- with love, patience and perseverance, results will come, 03:23:40 05/01/12 Tue

- Not a feis, but kids' Confirmation class had a mandatory monthly Teen Mass & pasta dinner which had to serve up approx 600 people (150 Confirmandi plus families). I'm bringing a friend with me. Does my dancer registration cover my entry into the feis or do I have to pay for an actual ticket (discounted, I assume)? And if I do have to buy myself a ticket, how much?
And for my non-dancing friend, does the feis have an adult admission fee that also acts as a (discounted) ticket? Basically, I just need to know how much money to bring for myself and my friend, given that I will pay my competition fee online ahead of time.

Booking at the host hotel, but outside of the contracted block will not meet this criteria. In order to avoid the facility fee, one must book within the contracted NAIDC group block.
