What I felt to be one of the most striking parts of BOTB is Jamie asking John if he thought Jamie's situation 'honorable' and John's realization of Jamie's humiliation and shame at being 'kept' by a sodomite rather than being transported or hanged. John's chagrin at learning this, his utter astonishment that what he had intended as kindness and as much leniency as he could manage was seen as shamefilled debasement, cuts him to the quick. How can he have caused so much pain by loving some one and yet, with Percy, by not loving some one. -- LJG Discussion board
