Subject: I hope that Karen won't get upset with this, but I have gotta share her amazing exchange with Diana from Compuserve with the people who don't go there. In it they are comparing John's love for Jamie with Tom Christie's for Claire. You can't miss this one!

Diana:
> He simply loves her--even though he'd rather not, and is rather horrified to find that he does--but then acquiesces to the situation, and without fanfare, puts her welfare above his own. <

Reading this, I was struck by the similarity between Tom Christie's feelings for Claire and Lord John's feelings for Jamie. Because this is essentially the same thing Lord John did, by taking Willie to raise as his own son. Not literally at the cost of his life, of course, but it did cause a massive upheaval in his personal life.

Karen

Dear Karen--

True. Which is why I'm always a little taken aback by people who say they think John's feelings for Jamie are "unhealthy obsession" or "infatuation," or whatever. Nope. If you love someone, in the pure sense of the word, you put their welfare above your own. And that's what he does, very simply. The fact that he finds Jamie physically attractive....well, so do most people, including said readers. Do they think _they_ have an "unhealthy obsession" with the man?

Diana:

Unhealthy obsession? Never! Unless you ask some of our family members who are not fans, in which case you might well get a different answer . I gave my mom OUTLANDER a few months ago and her only reaction upon reading it was a rather tepid, "Well, I can see why you'd like it." (Not true. She has no idea at all.) Now, whenever I mention anything having to do with the books, she just gives me a look, like, "Oh, *that* again," the way you'd humor someone who was slightly nuts. Oh, well. You can't please everybody, I guess.

Karen

Dear Karen--

Nope. And to try leads either to madness or mediocrity. Which is why when interviewers ask me what kind of reader I have in mind when writing, I laugh derisively. (Not that I hold readers in derision, I hasten to add. Merely that you _can't_ write with the desires and expectations of several million people in mind.)
