The personal preparations when going into a battle are almost like a meditation, checking and rechecking, contemplating if these may just be the last moments of your life. It must have been and still must be terrifying for soldiers making such preparations. - It's interesting you mention the routines and compulsions necessary to get ready for battle. In a more frivolous sense you see it in athletes when they get ready (picture the OCD nonsense of Nomar Garciapara in teh batter's box). We all (I do) have little compulsive or superstitious things we do to settle into a task. Jamie would calm himself with an Act of Contrition. John has no religious routine to comfort him.
