These days is seems any publicity is good publicity and celebrities don't seem to worry about their honor or the reason for their notoriety. And to an extent this is encouraged by the market that snaps up the gossip mags and buys the tell-all books. John's nightmare wasn't the pain but the dishonor of being flogged. I forget when I'm reading that being flogged was shameful and a reason to be scorned by others. And he had to watch in shame as Jamie endured shame and pain because of his presumption/stupidity of taking Jamie' hand. John had a long way yet to go before we meet him as the mature, genteel well spoken person later on. These books and discussions have opened up so much about John's character that I hadn't thought on.
