And he had to watch in shame as Jamie endured shame and pain because of his presumption/stupidity of taking Jamie' hand. John had a long way yet to go before we meet him as the mature, genteel well spoken person later on. These books and discussions have opened up so much about John's character that I hadn't thought on.
