Subject: Great quote, teddie! It reminded me that Jamie would have been completely hostile to John the entire time between the "pass" at Ardsmuir, to these months at Helwater covered in BOTB, since John's mental image is described this way. When I first read BOTB, I was coming at it from the perspective of later days at Helwater, when they talk about Willie's future, etc., so I was taken aback by the hostility, but this small moment reveals that at this point in the timeline there's no reason for either to believe that things will ever be otherwise. >>>>

I wonder if the intense hostility and estrangement is part of the reason it takes John so long to "recover" from his unrequited love, because his pangs seem to ease up once they are able to be friends. Yet you and Jane are right - - he may always compare every man he meets to the larger-than-life James Fraser.

Which in itself is a verra intriguing male friendship dynamic, as several ladies have mentioned on the books board. What is it that makes some of us so enjoy reading about this unusual relationship? For me there's something so lovely about what eventually grows between them - - the mutual affection and respect, etc. And Jamie does seem able to set aside the fact that John desired him so, while John seems to suffer less with it once he gets to know Jamie in the context of his family, surrounded by Claire & Brianna and the others.
