I didn't really care for PRIVATE MATTER. It's the only thing of DG's I've ever read where I had to literally struggle to finish it. While some parts of it were enjoyable, in my opinion, it introduced far too many new characters at once, most of whom had little interaction with or impact on Lord John, so it's difficult to keep them all straight. Also, the main premise of the story (the Trevelyan storyline) didn't really have much of a personal impact on Lord John, until fairly late in the book. Certainly not compared to the storyline in BOTB! I have never been much of a fan of mystery novels per se, so that aspect of the book wasn't enough to hold my attention on its own. "Lord John solves a mystery" doesn't really appeal to me; "Lord John solves a mystery relating to a scandal in his family's past" is much more intriguing and compelling, at least for me. I think that's why BOTB worked for me whereas PM did not.

I will probably give PM another try after reading HAND OF DEVILS, but I find it comparatively tedious to get through. BOTB was a far superior book, in my opinion.

Karen
