Yea, Oleander, go for it. I just finished, and, as usual, my intention to read slowly and carefully was forgotten and I am now reeling. I need time to ponder. It changed the way I see Lord John a lot. He's much more complex than I thought. His acceptance of, and competance at, violent situations was something I hadn't really thought of before. Yes, I knew he was a soldier, but this book described what that really means so well even I could follow it. And reading the scenes with his mother, the Countess, I kept wondering, is she an honorary MacKenzie? I love how DG portrays most of her women as strong, competant, capable, even given the constraints society places on them. Looking forward to good discussions with you folks. -- LJG Discussion board

Carol, I was sort of reeling with know so much about LJG, especially his pettiness. It bothered me. Now, that I've sat on it for a week, I've decided I love him just the same. Actually, I went to DOA (spoiler alert), and found where he met up with the Frasers on the Ridge (brought Willie). Claire was mad as hell and ask him why he was there. He replies, "I didn't come to seduce your husband". I'm sure we all remember that line. However, what I didn't really catch, or remember, was that he swept him long beautiful eyelashes down dramatically and batted them at her before he said that....so petty! Just one of those things I probably just ignored about him because I was acquiring a crush...but it does show that how he is portrayed in BOTB is not off the mark (at least in this respect).   - I actually love that particular scene. My take on it was that he was mad at John not for it actually hurting Claire (because I don't think that would really hurt her), but because it was just an inappropriate, rude remark and embarrassed Jamie.
