Subject: hair color gone to dark

Hi there,
Looking for any help i can get . I have dark brown hair and I had a little left over redish highlights from a highlighting kit i used this summer. I was tired of the red so i bought a a med brown color to colr my hair back to my natural color, well it is to dark and almost looks black in spots. Can I do anything other than waiting for it to come out. My friend said to keep washing it over and over.
