Subject: can i dye highlighted hair?

Hey! I have naturally dark blonde/ light brown hair...Ive been highlighting it for awhile, but last time (which was about 1 week ago) I tried the herbal essence kind which you brush on..it ended up all patchy and not even and with a slight orange tint. I want to dye my whole head back to a light brown but Im scared it will turn green...I used to bleach my hair and once I tried to dye it brown it turned a horrile green color :-O Do you think this will happen again since I only have highlights?? I cant afford to go to a salon right now :-( ANy help would be great!!
