Gotta ask, out of curiousity:

Logic suggests that if you're leading a reasonably healthy lifestyle, there's no reason for something like fasting.

So I'm curious what the purpose of this is, mostly because I don't get it.

If it's to cleanse yourself of the environmental cruft, well, unless you pull a Howard Hughes and put yourself in a clean room the whole time, you'll still be subjected to the same environmental concerns.

If it's to rid yourself of the chemistry that is modern american cuisine, perhaps there are less drastic options. Get off fast food. Go hit the local farmer's markets, and pester them about what they're treating their wares with. (Anyone that won't give you a straight answer, walk away.)

I'm not advocating any sort of food religion (vegetarianism, veganism, raw food, whatever) but the scientific part of my brain is wondering about the theory behind this fasting such that I can rationally evaluate if it has any relevance to my own life.
