Nope, can't help that at all. A GeoTIFF file has nothing to do with Macs per se. It's a TIFF file with geographic reference information in it. That information can be read by mapping software and so the software then knows where to plot information on top of the image of the map. A callibrated map is a map where geographical reference points are known. If you don't have such a map then you can't plot your tracks, waypoints, routes, whatnots, on top of the image. To callibrate a map you use whatever software you're using (assuming it lets you do this at all) and you tell it where known locations are. Usually you work with the corners and a central point, but good software will accept any valid information. The more points of reference you can provide the better. You also tell the software what datum to use, the scale, and so forth. So, yah, I can download GPS data with Nat Geo TOPO or other programs. I've done that, but if you really want to work with the data (the overlay) on a real map image (basemap) you need a calibrated map. Remember you can't really just paste a line, the track data, on top of some picture and hope things line up unless you match the "scale" of the picture and the data. With a calibrated map image that's done for you automatically. Then you can use your favorite mapping software and better plot routes, learn distances, and so on. Of course, if you don't really care about generating good maps then this is all moot. But you're an expeditioner, right..... ;-) You want to make nice maps....
