Here's an update on two jazz clinics, sponsored by Essentially Ellington and the Lincoln Jazz Center. "Teaching Improvisation" is at East Lansing, MI on July 6-8. "Rhythm Section Techniques" is in NYC on July 13-15. For undergrads, it's $200 for the clinic plus the cost of transportation/hotel. This is a steal!!! The quality of the clinicians is very high and you get individual attention in learning new techniques. These clinics are very hands-on and the concert at the end is fantastic! I HIGHLY recommend these jazz clinics for anyone who thinks they might ever direct a jazz band. The "Teaching Improv" workshop, especially, is accessible and cheap. You'll be hard pressed to find this much info so quickly and reasonably. Summer workshops are one of the very best ways of improving your knowledge and skills, and of beefing up your resume. It's this type of thing which separates your resume from everyone else's and makes you stand out in the job market.

For those interested in elementary teaching I would recommend looking into ORFF or KODALY workshops in the summer. The Orff Level I certification is especially useful and looks great on your resume as well. It's a two-week program and is more expensive ($400-500 plus expenses) but it's really worth it.
