You had your first sleepover not long ago. Not the first one where a kid came here - there have been a couple of those - but the first one where you went somewhere else.

You went to your friend William's house, and it was the first night in your life that I wasn't the one to put you to bed. You've had babysitters who tried, but you would never sleep until I got home, and, since I started losing my night vision, I haven't really gone out at night.

You were perfect. You were thrilled to go, behaved really well, went right to sleep, and came home perfectly proud of yourself. I was so relieved.

I always wonder whether I am ruining you with the cuddling and the bedtime rituals and the closeness. I worry that I am encouraging dependence and being selfish, trying to keep you little when you should be growing up and moving away from me. I worry that I am using you to compensate for the fact that I never go anywhere or do anything.

But, for now, at least, you seem to be okay.
