since Sheba got hurt in May 2006 she has not done any agility. She has gone on a diet and lost 21 pounds and she has been through a year of physiotherapy. She does the agility shows but she is handled by a little girl and Sheba wears saddlebags full of candy that she hands out to kids along with her photos.
I have started working with a border collie in agility. Tonight we were taking this year's photos so Sheba was at the practice. After we did four or five run throughs I took the border collie home and then went back. When I got there, everyone was looking for me... we were supposed to do the relays and I'd forgotten all about it. Yan, the club president said, "We're a dog short."
The relays are pretty cool and very fast. There is a row of jumps about a foot off the ground and then a tunnel. The tunnel is in the shape of a U so the dogs do the jumps, go into the tunnel and do the jumps again to get back. The other side is a row of hoola hoops about 6 inches off the ground and a tunnel then back.
So we are a dog short. I said, "I'll run Sheba but it has to be the hoops. I won't make her do any jumps." So for the first time in over a year, Sheba and I got in line. There were eight or ten people in the benches watching... husbands, wives, mothers of people in the group. Some had never ever seen Sheba run. So I yelled over, "You guys better watch this because we are never doing it again."
When it was our turn, Sheba just flew. I could hear Yan screaming "Holy Crap! Look at her!" We got back and Sheba had won her relay... for the first time in her life. She had never won one. Next relay was dog against dog and this time she was even faster. She got a 'standing ovation.' I fell down on the grass and Sheba pounced on me. Monica, one of the teenagers came over to hug her and she said, "oh my God, you're crying!" and she hugged me too.
One of the older ladies came over and said, "That was awesome! Are you going to do that in the show?" I said I couldn't because I'd never forgive myself if she got hurt again. Yan said, "No. And no one ever asks him to do that again."
That was the only time Sheba will ever do that but at least now I know she would be one of the fastest dogs in the group if she did it.
