A week or so ago, I noticed some small knots in the perineum area. I went to the doctor (GP, not gyn) and he said they were warts. He called an ob/gyn friend of his to ask about the best treatment. Apparently, after describing the warts to the ob/gyn, he decided that it would be best to refer me to the ob/gyn and not treat them himself. The ob/gyn (without ever seeing me) has decided to do a shave biopsy of the warts (which of course has me thinking the worst - not only about the procedure, but the diagnosis as well). I am absolutely terrified because apparently there is something so different about them that they would have to be seen by a specialist, and biopsied on the first visit.

I have never had warts before, so no idea why they are chosing biospy and cutting them out as the first method of treatment. I think that is what has me scared the most - why such a drastic procedure this early.

Anybody had any experience like this? And, anybody care to give me the in's and out's of a shave biopsy (what to expect, etc.)

Thanks!

Hi, I don't personally have experience with this, but I've put out a request to our gals on our private forum to come out and give you some reassurance if they can. We have lots of gals who have these kinds of issues and experiences on our private site (www.gyn-gals.org).

I think your doctor is making a wise choice with the shave biopsy. Your doctor could choose to see if the wart is benign or malignant. This will not let you know if the warts were a high-risk HPV types. High risk HPV testing can be doing on a biopsy. I hope your doctor will choose this option.

90% of all visible warts are thought to be of low risk HPV types 6 and 11. I think because your warts look different your doctor wants to make sure with the biopsy.

I personal feel that ALL warts should be sent to the lab so that we can get more information regarding what our bumps actual are.

I will hope the shave biopsy removes the warts so that none will reappear. Some women have had lots of luck using Aldara, but Aldara has lots of side affects but it is thought to boost the bodies ability to recognize and fight the virus.

Don’t think the worst, I feel your doctor is doing the best for you. Many HPV wart treatments are painful and this is an area that is very sensitive.

I hope that I have helped in some small way.

I have warts as well. A biopsy is a great thing. Most doctors will do that just to make sure they aren't missing something. You under care and that is what is important. Please keep us updated on your results and we are here for any and all support you need. Another great site for warts is www.hpvsupport.com

Thanks guys! I can't decide if I'm more afraid of the procedure or the possible outcome. (Outcome, I'm sure). This has completely caught me off guard. I've never so much as even had a yeast infection (I know that's not related).

I do have someone that has volunteered to go with me. Not sure if I'm going to take him up on that offer or not. I live about 30 minutes from where they are going to do it, so I think I probably will.

When my daughter was born, I was cut in two places - 3 stitches in one place, two in the other. I just keep telling myself that the biopsy will not be any worse than an episiotomy. But, if it is, I want to know beforehand. So, don't spare any details. I'd rather know up front than be surprised at the end.

Thanks!

They will numb you before hand. That part stings a little, and then after take a couple of Tylenol and you will be fine... :)

I have had a couple of vulva shave biopsies and the Novocain pretty much takes care of the immediate pain.

I had an Episiotomy so I can relate here also.

I think each person experience is going to be different, but I don't think the procedure will be horrible...not great but not horrible.

Plan on something’s afterward...ask your doc when you can soak in a bath...baking soda does wonders for an irritated area. Get some pure aloe vera with lodicane.

Also as an added precaution see if your doc will give you a prescription for Lidocane..5% gel...this can be a life saver...if urine gets on the area...this can cause irritation....use a squirt bottle to dilute the urine as your urinate.

Our girls have lots of idea...I hope you will join us at our on line support group.

Remember to ask for a copy of your pathology repot. It is good to keep these on file.

Still don't have the test results back, but so far all is healing well.

Little trick that the doc told me (and this really works, so thought I'd share)......mix equal parts of Benadryl and Mylanta for the stitches. I really was expecting to have to buy stock in Dermaplast after this, but the Bendadryl/Mylanta mix works better and lasts longer with each application than the Dermaplast. I have the same # of stitches with this as I did when my daughter was born. If the episiotomy/tear was a 10 (and believe me, we are talking stitches from one end to the other), I'd give this procedure a 3. Can't say for certain that the Benadryl/Mylanta mix is 100% responsible for the difference, but I do know that about 5 minutes after putting it on, I could tell a big difference. Certainly worth a try.

here's another great trick I learned along the way. Tea bags. I brew a bunch before surgery, keep them moist in baggie in fridge. They not only feel nice and cool but there is something in the tea itself that soothes the swelling and pain.
Sitz baths are also a real relief (add a little hydrogen peroxide)
By the way - Hi all - new to the group. I am headed into my 6th laser surgery. Doc says all 3 areas she (yes she!!) biopsied are positive and they will have to put me under again this time because there are fairly large areas.
As I said 6th time. So by now I am more ticked than scared. But what's a woman to do? And yes I have an awesome female oncologist. She understands.

So glad I found this group. My surgery will be early January. I may need a place to bear my soul while I recoup.

Thanks ladies.
