Good point, Ron. We have to also consider the fact that Eric, for instance, has been singing House of the Rising Sun for 54 years; he has to change it up to keep it interesting to himself. I've seen him several times and enjoy the changes as long as he avoids some of his ad-libbing.
Dylan is a prime example of someone who changes songs around - listen to the various live versions of Tangled up in Blue. In the current exhibition of his recently hand-written lyrics with illustrations in London, he's re-written parts of that song. You can hear variations of the songs from Blood on the Tracks on the new More Blood More Tracks box set - shows how these songs were developed. At a Dylan concert I sometimes have to listen to recognize a familiar lyric to identify the song he's singing.
