's message, "King of Hogoromo?" on 11/29/04 10:19:45pm Mon
The still harried guards seemed eager to oust the minority population of Hogoromo, especially the humans. There was tell that an elf parading around in Myuler's house was giving them trouble, and they were having a hard time getting that one out. All in due time.
Emi was sitting out in the courtyard next to the make-shift cage she had put her mother the swan into the day before. She was lost in thought, wondering where to go next from here. With the population of Hogoromo reduced to just Forgotten it would make cleaning up a lot easier, and without the fear of being attacked from within, things could run smoothly again, until she decided to allowed commerce to resume. Until then, they had enough food stored away to keep all left in the city well fed for the next few months.
She issued a sigh, watching the caged swan waddle around, pecking at the bars. For a brief moment she thought of ringing that fowl's neck, and it startled her. Stress, she concluded. She wanted to lash out at everyone. And she was the most alone now than she had ever been. Deep in her, she felt a slight satisfaction in her workings, ousting the people of Hogoromo, and ensighting a gap between her and the ever so loyal seer her mother valued so dearly.
One of the guards approached her, and she shot a venomous look at him. He stopped where he was and wrung his hands.
"Your orders have been taken to the limit my lady. We've cleansed *Emi smirked at cleansed* the city of all non-Forgotten persons. What of the beast?"
Emi blinked slowly. "The beast?"
"Yes, my lady. Wyrd."
"I've not seen him."
"...do you wish him to stay or go?"
Emi laughed slightly. "And you think he would do either on command of the guards?"
Still deep in her mind lingered that dread fear that should Wyrd be angered he would wipe out the entire city with merely a thought, and she felt it best not to impose her will on that creature. The guard said nothing. So Emi ignored him. He took it as leave, and left her, feeling uneasy about the steward and her intentions.
Bored, Emi moved over and unlatched the cage, and let the door swing open just enough for the swan to notice and approach. Emi did nothing as the bird left the cage and waddled around. Content that the bird wasn't going to go anywhere, she got up, and walked around the courtyard with her hands behind her back, unheeding of the swan, whom waddled her way to the fountain and climbed in, swimming around.
The morning was quiet...as quiet as it could be with the shouts and dismayed cries of their allies and of those that had lived her for so long, and now were at last being herded out of her walls.
"WHAT?"
A voice echoed so loudly that even the ground shook, and Emi lost her balance.
"I'LL DO NO SUCH THING, MORTAL!"
"Oh goddess."
Emi recognized that voice as Wyrd's. One of them had enough balls to actually approach Wyrd and tell him to leave. Emi jumped and flew up, clearing the wall just in time to watch Wyrd swat the guard with spear away from him, as four others rushed in on the great beast.
"That's enough!"
Emi's shout crawled down to them from her perch on the wall where she now stood, black and white wings spread out.
"As much as I would so enjoy watching Wyrd mangle the lot of you, I'd rather not lose anymore guards. Leave him be. He served this kingdom as he should have and he can come and go here as he pleases. You have a problem with that, you deal with him on your own, I'll not save your lives more than once."
The guards backed off on command, and Wyrd only turned to gaze two of his four eyes at Emi sidelong. [As he should have?] She made it sound as though he was bound and sworn his life to this city, when in fact he was only sworn to the woman that had run it. Emi stared back down at him, then shifted her gaze to someone who was walking up to Wyrd, and bade the creature's ear to him. She didn't know him, but he looked sinister. She kinda liked it. Black and red suited him. Wyrd raised his head and nodded, then snorted at the guards and walked off this that dark haired man. Emi just rolled her eyes and turned around, gliding back down into the courtyard.
Only now it was empty, save for the cage.
The swan was gone.
Emi's heart raced now, and terror took place of the annoyance and of the rage.
"no...mother...!"
Almost hysterically she was airborne again, and she was looking around wildly in the sky. There was no sign of her, and not even the sound. No one in the castle dared to touch that bird, so she was sure it wasn't any of them.
Six eyes lit up in delight, and she would fall further into the claws awaiting her. The death of that bird would be the final string to pull.
Emi dove back into the courtyard, and as soon as she hit the ground she was running, and grabbed the first guard she found around the collar of his uniform.
"THE SWAN IS GONE! FIND HER! NOW!"
Bewildered, the guard took off the moment she pushed him back, and someone sounded a bell.
But the only sound Emi could hear was the hammering of her heard in her ears.
How hard would it be to find a swan wearing a heart shaped locket?
