The Escavlone were all gone, as well as a majority of the knights and citizens. The city seemed so empty. The chill that continued to linger from that woman's 'message' and Emi could not shake it, then the attack on Tyrsis and she was shaken more...she never imagined an assassin, or one so ill-informed of his objective. Surely he should have known of Tyrsis' ability...
She wanted to leave, too, but found herself unable to spread her wings and leave this place. She wanted to leave, and never return. Perhaps to live somewhere where nothing was highly expected of her. Maybe even move on. A lone tear fell from her eye, and bounced off the wall of the tower, and disappeared into the darkness toward the ground.
She felt babysat, Tyrsis posting what was left of the guards by her room, and giving them orders. But she was never one to be cooped up in a room, her younger self was proof of that. But her younger self liked sleep more than she, and she was still in her room, asleep. The elder of the two didn't sleep much anymore, not since her long sleep before. She left her room, and when they argued, she told them she was going up to the tower right by her room, and if they wanted to watch her look at the stars, then they were more than welcome too. But they seemed not at all willing to follow her up there, and were sure they might hear should anything happen up two flights of stairs.
Everything was official now. Papers were signed, the right runners sent on their ways to inform what lords were left in the city of it. Perhaps not even a hundred people remained within the walls that could at least house thousands. Those like Myuler remained if not loyal to the authority of the city, loyal to the homes that they lived in for years upon years. The night was quiet, with only the sour sweet scent of dying roses still left on the breeze.
She looked out over the city from the tower. She couldn't even see those that had left anymore, long since disappeared beyond the trees. She sighed gently and turned to go back down into the castle, only to be greeted with the brief glimpse of a face, and a sword thrust into her gut. She gasped, then gagged and choked, a spray of blood bubbling from her lips and on to her assassin.
He forced the blade harder into her stomach, and put his hand on her back to complete the movement, his head pressed against hers as though they were lovers embracing, and whispered into her ear, "Your payment, for all the work you did for us." He backed her up as he said this, until her thigh bumped against the tower ledge. "May you find the peace you stole away."
She looked at him in the calm between moments, before he pushed her over the side of the tower.
An elf....or a human. She wasn't sure.
He didn't even bother to reclaim his sword from her body before she fell.
She was dead before she hit the ground....and no one found her until dawn.
A shriveled rose petal rested on her left cheek...her father's flute just barely beyond the reach of her fingers. A breeze drifted through it, and the sound it made sounded mournful.
Silence.
