Subject: Your music

Hello.
I first was introduced to Welsh male choirs through Paul Robeson. Well, not directly, but through research I was doing on his life. I wanted to understand in a deeper way (beyond the kindred politics) the connection he felt with the Welsh and they with him. The shared passion for music is one of those deeper links.

I discovered your choir by fooling around on the web. I am ording your CD - I can't wait to listen to it. I long ago fell in love with Robeson's voice, his deep bass stirring the depths of my soul. And I have through him fell in love with the welsh male choirs for many of the same reason.

One request. Are their any avid Robeson fans in your group or on this guestbook who might be willing to be interviewed? (Robeson's 1957 transatlantic concert, part of that year's Eisteddford, meant so much to him as he was banned from performing virtually anywhere in the US.) I am working on the 2nd volume of biography of Robeson. (The first volume was published in 2001 and is due to be reissued in paperback sometime within the next year.) I'm anxious to pursue the Robeson-Welsh connection further.

Last thing. Thank you so much for the fine music you and your group produces. It is an inspiration to me. It has also struck me recently that even in the 1930s when things were so terrible for miners in Wales, they kept singing. Incredible. And not unlike the experience of American slaves.
Thanks all.
Sheila

Your choir visited Edmonton a couple of years ago, at the Heritage Days Festival, and we were pleased to be able to buy one of your CDs there. I myself sang in a choir during high school days, and missed out on a fewa choir road trips to Wales - but who knew I would marry a Welshman (from Aberdare)! I have made a couple of trips to Wales. I love the countryside (and the shopping, even though I come from the city where West Edmonton Mall exists), and will seek you out the next trip over. Do come back to Edmonton. There's a huge Welsh population in this metropolitan city of 1,000,000 people.

Thank you for allowing others to hear the wonder of beautiful welsh voices. My mother Ann Protheroe is from Llanhilleth and my father Steve Tucker was from Abertillery. His brother in law Ted Meredith was one of the choir a few years ago, he sent us every tape that you did. It kept us up on home. I have been in the US since 1982 and still, to this, day cry when I hear the Welsh National Anthem Jacobs Ladder and Speed your Journey were my dads favourites, so they are very sentimental.
Again, Thank you, I would love to hear in person one day, come to Dallas PLEASE or Georgia ????????

We don’t know as yet what songs will be on it but there is a strong possibility that one of them will be Jacobs Ladder. Details of the new recording will be put onto the web site when available

I was overjoyed to find this website as I am the grandaughter of Tom Bundred the founder of the choir in 1909.
Looking down the emails I was surprised to see one that I had sent to Colin Bundred in Canada !! I didnt realise that the contact between Colin Rebecca and then myself had been via this website. ( I am only very recently computer literate !!! and my kids had been doing it all for me.)
Olga my mother Tom's daughter (as my niece Rebecca has said a few emails above )is living now in Kenfig Hill. She married Rev Ffrancon Davies who was the minister at Trinity Presbyterian Chapel in the 40s.
I am wondering whether there are any descendents of the original choir up till the time my grandfather died in 1937
in the present day choir. I have Vols 1 and 2 of Abertillery in Photographs and some of the names are listed under the photographs. I have one of Tom with two brothers called Elliott and there are also Cordeys and Powell as well as others.
If any one was kind enough to respond to this I would be very grateful.
I have not yet looked in your Archive section so I dont know what is there yet but I have a bookful of n/paper cuttings kept by my grandmother Ruby who was herself the choir accompanist at one time. I would be happy to send copies of these to anyone who was interested.
I am now looking forward to listening to the recorded extracts on this website and finding out when the next concert is though I live in the south east now. Iola Davies

Hello!

I wrote an e-mail few months ago of how touched I was by the remarks written on your homepage. The effects of the coal industry and the love of music mentioned in those few paragraphs are Welsh elements that have also made a strong impact on my family. I soon received an email from the choir mentioning that if I was ever in Wales, that I should stop by and say "hello."

My wife, children, and I will be in Wales for three weeks in August and would like to attend the concert on August 17th. Unfortunately, I couldn't see the address for the concert. Also, I would be very interested in attending a rehearsal and was wondering when the rehearsals are held?

We are all looking forward to visiting the "land of our fathers" or more specifically, the "land of my mother". Thank you for keeping the wonderful tradition of the Welsh choirs alive, we look forward to meeting and hearing you soon.

Kind regards,

Kevin Smith and family

You will probably think I am crazy and you maybe a little bit right. But I am going to "give it a go" and try to make some sense of this - so - A good friend of mine a Mr. Don Jones from Swansea, S. Wales and used to sing in the Dunvant Male Choir. He heard from one of his friends living in Canada that they are going to touring there in Aug. or Sept., does not know the dates but would like to go and see them. He does not have a computer, so I said I would see if I could find any thing about it on the net. I thought for sure they would have a web-site by now (His last program is about 10 years old)but now luck so far. Now the Cheeky part - would have any information about them, or are they rivals and you are not interested in checking this for me. I will understand, hurt but I will understand. You are right as you have probably guessed I am an American married to & living with an Australian, but Don is a good friend and I would like to help out if possible. If you have a web-site or email address I would really like to have it.
Thank you in advance (I hope) Maxine P,S. By the way you Web-site in terrific.

I know that Luther Evans (and his wife -Louise nee Thomas) had many connections with musical and choral activities in Abertillery up to 1920s & 30s. Megan Powell, their daughter was my mother's cousin. I am loking for sources of information about his contribution to music/singing in Abertillery when he was teaching there. I know that for 30 years + he was the organist at the King Street Baptist Chapel. There was a local newspaper - the Gazette???
I would appreciate any information - or pointing in a direction which might yield some information in print.
Luther's father had worked in the Grey pit/mine. My father worked in the Vivian up to 1923. My uncle - Len Roberts worked in the Abertillery Tin plate works. His daughter, Margery Rogers still lives in Abertillery.
This was an unplanned approach - I am delighted to find that the singing traditions are continuing.
I live now in Bradford, Yorkshire.

I have made enquiries for you with our choir members and have posted your mail onto the choir notice board. If I can find out anything for you regarding Luther Evans then I will let you know. If you haven’t already done so I would suggest that you log onto the Abertillery District web site, it’s an excellent site and has many more visitors than we do with a much more active message board.

Luther Evans lived in Queen Street and taught in Queen St School. Was also organist at King St Baptist Church. Died probably late 1940’s. Had one daughter Megan- married but no children. Also lived in Abertillery but died many years ago. No surviving family as far as we know.

I am searching for the burial place and details of one Frank Richards, late of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers World War one. He wrote two books, Old Soldiers Never Die and Old Soldier Sahib. He won the Distinguished Conduct medal and the Military Medal. He died in the summer of 1961,and his death was registered in Bedwellty.I do not know where he is buried. He was one of Nantyglo/Blaina's most famous sons.He was born in 1883/1884 and I am unable to find out where he was buried. Any help would be most welcome.

While researching the origins of my family name I came across the photograph of the 1914 Orpheus Glee Society. I could not contain my "glee" on finding out the conductor was Thomas Bundred, who was, like all the Bundred family, decended from from Thomas Bundred, born in 1760 in Landrynog Wales. If there are any Bundreds still associated with the choir or even still living in the area I would love to hear from you. Congratulations on a wonderful history and an excellent web page. The photoghraphs of your Canadian Tour are spectacular and I am sorry I missed out seeing and hearing the choir when there were hear. I guess I will just have to make a trip over there.

Hello Colin thanks for your mail and your kind comments, there are no Bundreds associated with the choir these days and I myself don’t know of any Bundreds live locally although I will pass your mail onto our choir members who may know differently.

The photograph that you referred is of a low quality resolution in order to save space and downloading time for use on the web. I have the original photograph in my possession and if you would like a more clear copy of Thomas Bundred then I will scan it and post it onto you. Please let me know.

Have you checked out the Abertillery Web Site it’s an excellent site and I am sure it will be of interest to you. It can be found at http://www.abertillery-net.co.uk/

Dear Colin
Thomas Bundred was my great grandfather! My Nana (his only child) is still alive and well and living in Kenfig Hill, where she moved with her husband (the late Rev. Ffrancon Davies) many years ago. There lies the reason why there are no longer any Bundreds! However, there are quite a few Ffrancon Davies around, most of whom are still in Wales (although I am in London).
She has done some research on the family tree, although it is all in paper format, but you may be interested.
I would love to hear from you.

I remember being one of the youngest members of Abertillery Orpheus when I joined the choir back in 1985. Unfortunately 18 years on I’m still one of the youngest members in the choir which probably goes to show how difficult it is to get young men to join our choirs these days. The pity of this is that when we do get new members to join, who are shall we say not of the younger generation they all say we wished we had joined twenty years ago, where as we will be able to say I’m glad I joined twenty years ago.
Best wishes to you and Beaufort Male Voice.

I have fond memories of Abertillery Orpheus as my father Cliff Samuel of Somerset Street was a member for many years from about 1930 to 1960 I also did a bit of singing myself and on a number of occasions sang as soloist with the choir together with Donald Ashman when we were about 16 years of age.I remember Trevor Wilde, though I expect there are not many left now of the ones I knew.I think it was a Mrs.James that was conducting the choir at that time.My brother and cousin used to sell programmes at the concerts.I live in Portsmouth now and have done for the last 40 years and so does my brother and family.Only last week my daughter was visiting me from New Zealand and we were looking at some of the old photographs of the choir.Best wishes to anyone who remembers me or my Dad and continuing good luck to the choir.

Dear Sirs,

I have just recently read the opening remarks on your web page and I feel compelled to send you my feelings regarding what was said in those first few paragraphs. Let me first say that I love Wales very much. My mother is Welsh, coming form the town of Aberbargoed. She moved to the US in 1964 and we have only been back to Wales a few times (twice for me).

I am actually attending University now in hopes that my family and I will be able to immigrate to Wales after the completion of my Masters Degree. I plan to teach at a Welsh University while finishing my PHD and becoming a professor in Business. It is my hope that in some small way, I can contribute to the future of Wales where the generations that I teach can make their own destiny and not fall subject to any outside economic powers as their ancestors did when the English dug up Wales' coal, leaving the countryside and the economy stripped.

Recently here in the states, nine men in Pennsylvania were stranded 200 feet beneath the surface in a collapsed coal mine. This event caused me to look back at the sacrifice my Welsh ancestors had made. Particularly my grandfather Charles (Charlie) James who worked in the Brittania Collery in Aberbaroged his entire life. He also loved to sing, like your fathers. I was touched by the paragraph that mentioned how your members no longer mine for coal but, for the most part, have found better lives and occupations.

I guess I really just wanted to say thank you for writing such a nice introduction to yourselves, the choir and Wales. I also sing, it must be in the Welsh blood, and I love to hear the Welsh choirs. I take great pride in my heritage and I can tell that you do as well. I listened to some of the extracts from your recordings and I think your feelings of nationalism are reflected in your voices. Please extend my appreciation and praise to your choir, I think they have excellent voices. When I do arrive in Wales (in just about two years time) I will definitely come to Abertilley to hear the choir. I apologize if this email is a little muddled up, I don't think I've been able to write what I've been feeling, but for some reason I was moved by your words and had to let you know that out of the millions of people surfing the internet, you were able to make an impact on at least one of us.

Thank you very much ( or should I say Diolch yn fawr) for your recollections of growing up in Wales, your Welsh pride and your fine voices.

Kind regards,

Kevin Smith

Hello Abertillery Orpheus, Ken Brickell writing. I've just found the excellent site. I suppose some of you will remember me, but I was a member from about 1952 for a few years until I left the area, but I still remember all the old faithful songs. I sang with the Gwalia in London for about 25 years and when they decided to do Comrades about 20 years on (and Crossing the Plain) I was still note perfect. What an education. Nice to see The Undertaker is still active, or shouldn't I call him that anymore. Anyway Trevor, it was really good to see that you are still alive and kicking and actively involved. I live in Oulton Broad now and still have a barbershop cum whatever group of eight. We sing anything from Bach to Beetles via Barbershop and spirituals. I write most of the arrangements, which might come as a surprise to Martin. I assume the Martin referred to in other letters is Martin Budd. If so, please give him my very kind regards. One of my best memories was of Mr Chapel singing "Flow Gently, Deva", but I cannot remember his tenor. Ask Harry Jones if he remembers his fight with Ray Jones in "Die Fleidermaus". Is Joyce still about? God, I could sit here all night writing this. If you'd like to take a look at a couple of my arrangements, I'd happily send them in the hope that you would use one or two. Anyway, I've enjoyed this little sojourn. It would be nice to hear from you. Best regards, Ken. P.S. I am really taken with Jack's paintings - I think they are lovely, especially the one of Six Bells pit. My father spent most of his life down there. Damn nearly lost it a couple of times.

Hi Ken. Yes I remember you, but I remember Ann better. I still have photos of us taken together when we did the pantos. Give me an address and I'll dig them out and make copies for her. I hope she is still well. I came across some programmes the other day from "Babes in Robin's Wood" with Ann and myself and Windsor Bool and God knows who else. I can still tap, although seeing as I retire next year, I avoid all forms of dance like the plague. I've still got my original taps somewhere! What a sad bastard. Anyway, have a good Christmas. Let's hear from you Nd I'll send the photos as promised. Ken

Hello Mr. Mason,

I was just surfing through this sight and remembered attending your concert in Calgary in 1990. I don't know if you remember me, but my parents are Dick and Doris Morgan. It was a pleasure to meet you and the rest of the Choir, as well as some of the other persons who knew my Grandmother, Lillian Jones.

Just thought I'd leave a little message to say it was a memmorable time. Please give my regards to your wife Anne.
Regards,
Richard

Dear Martin,

Just browsing through the web site - interesting to see a lot of familiar faces and fantastic to see that you are still involved with the Choir.

Still play and teach flute and piano / keyboard and still teaching in Nottingham - where have the last 25 years gone since leaving school?

Great to hear the voices of the choir again, let me know if you have a booking in nottingham in the future and will try to get to see you.

Best Wishes

Jonathan Jenkins

Dear Jonathan,

It’s good to hear from you and I’m glad you are continuing with your music. I have very happy memories of performances we shared a long time ago. It’s all very different now although Nantyglo School is still standing (just!).

My wife and I now live in Rogerstone, near our daughter and family. We are keeping fairly well although I retired from conducting after a successful trip to Canada. Stephen Bard is now in charge and I help out when required. We last sang in Nottingham in 1995 at the Albert Hall before a very enthusiastic audience but we have no further visits planed as of now.

Is Julian still with the bank and does he pick up his clarinet at all now.
Thanks for getting in touch. Hope you and yours are all well.

Martin

Hi there Martin, I see that you now answer messages personally. Modern technology has finally caught up with you?
Just a quick message to wish you and Christine and all the family well. I note that you have retired as Musical Director of the choir after many years. I am glad to hear that you still remain in the choir though.
I am still active with music between the organ and keyboards and also drums and euponium with the police band.
I have also released a CD on the organ and if you are ever pottering around the web you can see details of this on my webpages.
Regards to all the choir members....

I came across this site when I was doing a 'search' on my family name... My Dad was born in Abertillery in 1909 and died in 1995. Although relocated to the Midlands during WW1 he loved his Welsh heritage and often spoke about his birth place and returning to the village for the 'Whit Walks'. I know nothing at all about my grandparents - my grandfather died in WW1 and my grandmother died before I was born... but I do recall some of the places he spoke about i.e., the Six Bells Colliery. I am waffling. Sorry. Anyway - will make a point of vising the site more often to see what I can glean about the 50% of my heritage!!!

I found this site by accident, and was pleasantly surprised to find a bio on Martin Budd. He was my music teacher at Abertillery Grammar School during my undistinguished career there in the mid 60's to early 70's. Alas I never did master the recorder!

I had to write to send Mr. Budd my very best wishes and wish the choir continued success. My home is now the beautiful state of Washington, but Wales is never far from my mind.

Hello Gentelman,
I maybe a decendent of one of your own, George Hathaway. He lived in a house on the steep hillside of Brynithel. He was employed by the Six Bells mine and raised three daughters, Vera, Joyce and Rita. Joyce is my mom, if you could send me any information on your Choir and maybe my grandfather it would be great!

It was also nice to see Trevor Wilde doing well, I went to school with his son long long ago.....

Hi Ken

Your name is'nt familiar, but it was a long time ago, I lived in Edward St and knocked around with Martin Preece, and we had a skiffle group for a while playing in local pubs mainly. I left Aber in 1960 to do National Service, and never came back other than on visits.

I came across your site by accident tonight and read it with fond memories. It has been many years since I performed with the choir at several concerts playing drums for the up-tempo numbers not to mention the epic recording of "The Tyleri Sound" LP where I was stuffed into a school classroom with my drums and a microphone where I couldn`t hear or see anything. My regards to Martin in his retirement as musical director and hope that he still enjoys singing with the choir.I have reason to thank Martin as he spent many years trying to teach me at school.I think he deserves a medal!! Also to Steve Bard of whom I also have memories sharing the euphonium stand with Abertillery Youth Band.
Although living in Bidgend with my family I do get to visit the valley often.
I wish you all well for the future and hope to see you all soon.

Congratulations on the site and thanks to the people who put it together.

Had to laugh at the following on your "engagements" page.

"1) A recommendation for a licensed premises suitable for a post concert social evening, with if possible an extension of licensing hours to 11:30 or if possible 12:00."

Here, in Australia, we don't think much a dry arguement. It seems, in Wales not a lot is thought of a dry sing along.

Cheers

Greetings from Edinburgh.

My wife and I met half a dozen or so of your choir in the Royal Oak pub in Edinburgh last
Saturday night after the game. We had a whale
of a time ! The guys are a credit to your choir
and Wales. I must apologise that I cannot recall
the names, I think I had one cup of tea to many!
It would be great if any of the guys could get in
touch. One chap said that his e mail address was
in the site but I don,t know which one.
If we should come down your way we would love to
meet the guys again.

PS: I was wearing a red BT rugby jersey which made everyone think that I was Welsh. It was only my voice which gave me away!

All the best to everyone, I hope your concert
tomorrow goes well.
