在研究聖經意義的難題時,我們必須采用所謂「文法兼歷史的釋經法」(grammatico-historical interpretation)這只是普通常識,和我們解釋任何古今文獻或講章所用的方法是一樣的。這方法包括了解上下文、原文、文化及歷史背景、和文體。我們常說「按字面的解釋」(literal interpretation),但這并不意味著愚蠢的解釋。也就是說,我們相信作者的原意是正確的,而不企圖猜測在字里行間另有什麼隱藏的「真意」。那些從事這類猜測的人,可以愛怎麼猜就怎麼猜,而事實上,人已經用盡了各種可以想像(和難以想像!)的說法去解釋聖經的「真意」。此即所謂「自由派基督教」的基本原則。神學家采信「字句、全面默示」(verbal, plenary inspiration
)之說。「字句」意即用字遣詞(非僅文意)是由神引導的。這就排斥了「神是給了作者一些靈意的洞悉力,卻任由這些作者運用有限的、人的能力將之寫定」之說。「全面」意即一切所有的,而非片面的。
