Thank you for this forum!

Liberal, I am uncomfortable with your description here because you sounded like you were making a 1st century Jew look like a 20th century modern man dressed in a three piece suit. The OT tradition was the (hi)story of the Jewish people (of course it includes different forms of literature too) told from a faith perspective. It is bound up with what it meant to be a Jew ... with their very identity. They didn't 接受一本古書的一部份做自己的信仰, like a 20th century person can pick and choose which sacred text they believe in. The OT tradition was their only story! It so happened that their story has an inextricable relationship with a god by the name of Yahweh.

>-i tried also to answer why evangelicals believe the

The evangelicals (or historically virtually all Christians) picked up that tradition from the Jews and believe the OT as God's word. They, of course, believe also in the NT as having the same status -- I will not touch on the formation of the NT for now. Therefore, to me, they didn't make the bible into God's word to safeguard their belief but is the other way around: "Since the bible is God's word, it must be trustworthy," thinks the evangelical.

>(the logic that follows

Fair enough.

Good point.

Do you have specific examples in mind? Evolution being one? You and I both agree that the bible is not a scientific document. I don't see why one should squeeze for something that is not in the bible in the first place (like the 6 days creationists did)? Let science do its job while always questioning the presupposition behind any scientific finding. Let's study the bible against its socio-historical background and always beware of the presuppositions we bring to the text. For myself, I simply don't see modern science as an enemy of the bible at all.

>that is happening, conservatives equate their literal

>evolution, and argue for rejection of evolution by
>recklessly distorting it

Well, many conservatives simply don't read their bible careful enough and do violence to the text. I am appalled at the way Henry Morris interpret Genesis. :)
