Did you ever see any Monte Hale westerns? When we first moved to Calif. in 1967, I was just about 11 yrs old; my parents managed our apartment building in North Hollywood. One of the first days there, this tall guy in a fancy suit and cowboy boots, with a full head of silvery white hair, comes walking in to pay his rent. My Mom and Dad lit up right away as if they recognized him. I had no idea who he was. He was very friend, slight western 'drawl' that was very real... We talked a bit about nothing in particular, I can't even remember the conversation now. But the next day when I got home from school, he had left a large autographed photograph of himself, complete with 'white cowboy hat'... The inscription was "To my Pal, Barry - remember to always listen to your Mom & Dad." I remember thinking at the time "who the heck is this guy calling me his Pal and telling me to listen to my Mom & Dad!?
It was only many years later in college when I studied Film History that I realized who he was! He was the first "celebrity" I ever met, and he made a lasting impression. He'd often come by and sit for coffee with my folks, but I never hung around to listen to his stories, and I always regretted that later.
Don't know why Ghost Towns made me think of him! I think he just passed away last year, in his 90's.
