That is unfortunate......I'd first ask your brother in law why he didn't ask your son to help. Maybe he did and your son wasn't available that day? If he didn't ask, tell him again how important it was to include your son in this project. Of course......thank him up and down for building it and paying for it.

As far as Tom goes.....you said the place was a fixer upper, and I'm sure there are more than a few opportunities for Tom to help you. He is included in your family, and whether he knows it or not, he is an active part of your family. While you recover, you aren't going to be able to do all the things you will normally do, and you most likely will depend on Tom to help you. That makes him directly involved in your care, which I think he wants to do. I wouldn't mention the stairrail unless he asks. If he asks....just say your brother in law took it upon himself to do it because he wanted to help too.
