What do you mean by "small" groups? -- duckie, 16:30:59 11/14/07 Wed [1]
Are you looking for alternatives to An Com schools? Small An Com schools? A little more detail would help. In the US, you have An Comisiun schools, An Comhdhail schools, AAIDT schools, CRN schools and I think CRDM as well. Elsewhere, you have other choices.

Small groups -- me, 07:52:59 11/15/07 Thu [1]
I mean smaller organisations. We are a small school looking for an option as the organisation we are part of just now is too big and we feel swamped by the glitter and the cost and the pressure. We want to have fun but feel pressured as we dont do all the things that are needed to win on even an irregular basis and it is not fun telling the kids why they are not winning. We love doing feises but dont want to go down the road of big expenses (we dont have the money)which seems to be required to get even moderate success. We want to know what standard the other organisations are and where exactly they are located. We are not in North America but I wont go further down that road just now as I dont want everyone knowing just yet what we are going to do ( I think)

oh, okay. -- duckie, 18:44:55 11/15/07 Thu [1]
I understand completely. I left the An Com world myself, for AAIDT less than a year ago, and most still don't know I've left. I'm in the US, so I'm guessing a bit here. In terms of Ireland and the UK, CRN and CRDM have a pretty good structure, it seems (CRN more so, but that's because they're older). Outside of there, the largest in mainland Europe is WIDA. They are getting bigger steadily, and have regular competitions. We in AAIDT have one school outside of the US (in NZ).
With all of the 35 or so other organizations in the world, most have true open feiseanna (CRN is not, and I wouldn't recommend dancing in their feiseanna unless you have joined up, and CRDM is starting to close theirs down a bit). "Open platform" means that you can compete whether or not you are associated with that organization. Just find out how they classify their dancers, and you're good to go.
Some of the worldwide organizations are listed in Wikipedia, I'm sure, and I know that on a website called www.diochra.com there's a lot of world ID info. I wish that I knew more about the orgs to help you. I would try the internet for searches, and see what you can find. If you go to www.Diddlyi.com, there are ID dancers from all over the world who are posting there, too, and they can help (yes, I have a page there).
There is hope, and there are still competitive options without the cost or extremes. Hang in there (as we say in the states).

Copied below is the info from Wikopedia . . . there are many OPTIONS FOR IRISH DANCE ORGANIZATIONS out there . . . and do not be pressured into one or the next > also, although it is not widely written (as you can see from further posts below) there are people involved with some of the "big" organizations who are exploring other options (teachers, students and adjudicators!). Open Platform Organizations? -- Marilyn, 05:49:52 11/18/11 Fri [1]
Take heart > there are LOTS of Open Platform organizations in the world and they are growing in size daily! :) Some of the Open Platform organizations are "new" ie, within the past couple of years, while others are 10 or 20 years old!
Check out the following ... they both have a wealth of information about Open Platform Irish Dancing ...
http://voy.com/226089/ (this is a forum dedicated to Open Platform discussions)
http://irishdancinginfo.co.uk/default.aspx (attempts to list all organizations - Closed platform and open platform .. although it does take some weeding out to figure under which category each is ...)
Good Luck in your search to find an organization that matches your dance school philosophy ... I am sure there is at least one organization out there that will! :)
As of today (Nov 18, 2011) .. the following is a list of Open Platform; Partially Open Platform; and Closed Platform organizations that I have been able to define ... Please note that the organizations listed under the Open and Partially headings are ones I have actually communicated with and asked specifically about Open Platform feis opportunities ... so I can confidently offer that listing to you. At the bottom of the listing is another heading of organizations that I have "heard" about but have not received confirmation from them as to their position on Open Platform feis/events, etc.
Open Platform Irish Dance Organizations (listed in alphabetical order)
Irish Dancing schools and/or teachers will often align themselves or be members of an Irish Dancing Association or Federation. These organizations operate as governing bodies with constitutions and have in many cases, set instructional curriculum and competition (feis) rules. There are many different organizations and they have been listed in alphabetical order according to the degree in which they offer and participate or encourage participation in Open Platform Feiseanna and Events. I've also included a contact email so that you can approach them with your individual questions. Good Luck in your search to find an organization that matches your dance school philosophy ... I am sure there is at least one organization out there that will! :)
FULLY OPEN ORGANIZATIONS:
CRG - Cumann Rince Gaelach, Linda at: familydolan@eircom.net
CCE - Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (comhaltas.ie/locations/detail/canada_east/ or http://comhaltas.ie)
CRN - Cumann Rince Naisiunta ( http://www.crn.ie/ or http://www.crn-usa.org/index.html )
NAIDF - North American Irish Dance Federation (http://naidf.com/index.php)
WIDA - World Irish Dancing Association (http://www.worldirishdance.com/)
PARTIALLY OPEN ORGANIZATIONS:
AAIDT/AFA - American Feis Association/American Association of Irish Dance Teachers. (http://aaidt.com)
FDTA - Festival Dance Teachers Association ( http://www.fdta.co.uk/)
TOTALLY CLOSED PLATFORM ORGANIZATIONS:
An Comisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha (CLRG) - The Irish Dancing Commission (www.clrg.ie/en/index.php) Please note that AIDA, IDTAC; IDTANA; NAFC; RTME; TIDANZ are all formally affiliated with CLRG and therefore follow the same rules. CLRG and it's associated organizations operated as Closed Platform with regards to competition, feis, and events to non-members.
An Comhdhail. ( http://www.irishdancingorg.com/comh/) An Comhdhail operates as Closed Platform with regards to competition, feis, and events to non-members.
ORGANIZATIONS I HAVE HEARD OF BUT DO NOT KNOW WHERE THEY SIT ON OPEN PLATFORM SPECTRUM: so some may be Open while others may be Closed?)
CAID - Celtic Association of Irish Dance. ( http://caid-irishdance.webs.com/ )
CIDA/CDA - Celtic and Irish dance Association Inc. in Southern Australia ( http://www.celticdance.com.au/ )
CMFA - Cead Mile Failte Association (http://www.cmfa-id.co.uk/default.html)
CRDM - Cumann Rince Dea Mheasa ( http://www.crdm.ie/)
IMDA - Irish Music and Dance Association ( http://www.irishmusicanddanceassociation.org/)
IDTA - Irish Dance Teachers Association enquiries@irishdancinginfo.co.uk
NSID/NIDTA - Nordic Society of Irish Dance/ Nordic Irish Dance Teachers Association (http://www.nsid.org)
PIDTA - Performance Irish Dance Teachers Association ( ?? )
PS > I noticed a posting I'd done more than a year ago (boy, my knowledge base has grown a lot since then!) It was a list I'd copied from Wilkipedia about "Open Platform" and ironically almost all on the list are NOT Open Platform! Sorry ...
