you might be causing some blood mentioning the war
superleague was seperate to arl.
superleague recruited 5 centremen then went after some touchies and some reggie refs eg steve carroll, darren gocher, steve chiddy . the referees were on a fairly good wicket and only refereed superleague matches.
arl was operated by mick he would be the man to ask regarding that side, but they were two seperate groups.
it was never a case of a higher standard, the breakaway was always about money, pay tv and the rights of one media group wanting control to the game.
From memory superleague also used in the meninga and lamb cups local refs eg canberra or brisbane to referee their games, reggies and 1st grade was done by the graded guys and either brian grant or graham annesley was in charge
