Firstly I want to clarify that my proposal is only for the 'player challenge' component of the tennis Hawk-Eye system to be available to NRL players, not the ball trajectory component, as challenges in NRL would be resolved by the Video Referee in the same manner as Trys are currently assessed.

Stephen, as you mentioned, tennis is a line-based game where umpires make explicit calls based on 'whether a ball was in or out', however I consider most common incorrect calls to be explicit also:
(1) Knock-ons - The ball either travels forward or backward our of the players hands.
(2) Forward pass - ball either travelled forward of the passing player or backwards.
(3) Stripped ball - Defender either stripped the ball with more that one tackler involved or the ball was dropped cold.

All these items are all currently being assessed by the Video Referee when requested, to confirm a valid try has occured.

I want to add that a challenge would only be available to teams when play is halted after the ref has made a call, not while play is live and players believe a call has been missed.

Stephen, can you elaborate on what you would consider to be impactical about offering players a challenge for review of a call by video ref?
